National Assembly Minority Whip and Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) Junet Mohamed distanced himself from claims that he was steering clear from the Azimio la Umoja demonstrations against President William Ruto's government.

Junet on Sunday, July 23 was responding to a news graphic which claimed that he implored the Raila Odinga-led coalition to explore other strategies apart from protesting against the Kenya Kwanza government.

The card also claimed that Junet had suggested that Azimio should shift their attention towards coming up with a better strategy to win the 2027 general elections.

"The truth is we lost the election. That is why I'm finding it hard to trust that demonstrations would get us to the State House. We need a different strategy if we are to win in 2027," read the graphic.

The lawmaker came out to disown the remarks and flagged the graphic as fake on Twitter. This is despite Junet being largely missing in action from the Azimio protests for a while.

Speculations have been rife regarding Junet's absence from the protests despite his active role in the campaigns preceding the August 9 general elections. After Raila lost the polls to Ruto, he had taken a back seat, even though he has been a vocal figure in Parliament.

Junet's remarks came a day after Azimio announced that the anti-government demonstrations would resume on Wednesday, July 26, but for one day a week instead of three days a week, going forward.

In a statement read by former Murang'a County Governor Mwangi wa Iria, Azimio urged their supporters and the general population to come out in large numbers and demonstrate against the State, vowing that all the leaders will join the protesters despite threats.

"We will be there to ensure that we force this government to listen to the people. We know that they intend to arrest and torture us but we will not relent," Wa Iria stated.

Azimio la Umoja noted that the cost of food, fuel, and other essential goods has been increasing steadily in recent months, putting a strain on household budgets.

The coalition is demanding that the government take action to address the rising cost of living. They are also calling for a reduction in taxes, subsidies on essential goods, and increased government spending on social programs.
