National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula, on Thursday, June 8 kicked out Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo and her Kisumu West counterpart, Rosa Buyu, from Parliament after grounding the proceedings to a halt in dramatic fashion.

Wetangula was ruling on the ouster of Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege as the deputy minority whip when normal House affairs spiralled out of control in moments.

The Speaker in his decision ruled that he would not allow the ouster of Chege from her position owing to a petition filed in court against the ouster.

His decision enraged the Azimio MPs in attendance who defied orders to leave the chamber.

"Sergeant in arms, kindly ensure the two MPs are taken outside the Parliament.

"Honourable Buyu and Millie Odhiambo, please leave the House. I want to see the two outside... Sergeant at Arms can you take the two members out!" Wetangula ordered as the duo defied his orders.

As the chaos continued, some of the Azimio MPs inched closer to where Chege was seated as they demanded that she be kicked out of her position, triggering a swift response from a contingent of sergeants of arms who moved to protect the Nominated MP.

Amidst the heat of the moment, Wetangula ordered that the sittings be suspended for 15 minutes to allow for tempers to cool.

"The house will take a recess of 15 minutes. Lower the mace," he directed.

Chege on Wednesday, June 7 called upon Wetangula to provide assistance to her ahead of her removal as the Deputy Minority Whip of the National Assembly (NA).

Speaking during the National Prayer Breakfast held at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Chege implored Wetangula to help her navigate what she termed as a difficult challenge.

"The best thing I did was not to run away from them but just think bigger picture about Kenya. As they plan to remove me as Deputy minority whip Mr Speaker, I hope that you look at me with a better eye," she said.

"There is nothing wrong I have done. The only thing I have done is to think about Kenya first and not myself. Hopefully, Kenya is going to rise."

Chege went on to explain why she opted to work with the Kenya Kwanza government citing a Swahili saying that "one who does not accept defeat is not a worthy competitor".

Speaking at the Azimio la Umoja Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting on Tuesday, May 30, National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi announced Embakasi West Member of Parliament Mark Mwenje as Chege's replacement and the coalition had communicated the changes to the speaker.

"In furtherance of those resolutions by Jubilee NDC, Azimio has today settled on Hon. Mark Mwenje, MP, Embakasi West, as Deputy Minority Whip of the National Assembly, replacing Nominated MP Hon. Sabina Chege, who has since joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

"We recognize Hon. Mwenje as a committed, consistent, energetic and youthful fighter who has shown the will to stand up for the people and the party. We have no doubt that he will prove equal to the task," Wandayi stated.
