The National Police Service (NPS) has hinted that the fatal shooting of Kasipul Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Ong'ondo Were was 'targeted' and 'premeditated'.

In a statement on late Wednesday, April 30, while confirming the "tragic and senseless" shooting of the lawmaker, the NPS revealed the last moments before Were's demise in Nairobi.

Reports confirmed by the Nairobi Regional Police Commander revealed that at around 7:30 pm, a white Toyota Crown vehicle came to a stop at a red traffic light on Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout. It was here that all hell broke loose.

"Eyewitnesses have indicated that a motorcycle carrying a rider and a pillion passenger stopped alongside the car. The pillion passenger approached the vehicle and fired shots at the passenger side before jumping back onto the motorcycle and speeding away," stated NPS in part.

The driver of the car and a male passenger, both unhurt, managed to rush the injured MP to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Further details gathered at the hospital confirmed the deceased to be the Kasipul MP.

Though hinting at the nature of the crime being a planned assassination, NPS cautioned that "At this stage, it is too early to provide further details."

Senior police commanders and detectives were present at the scene, piecing together the circumstances surrounding the death. NPS went on to condemn the heinous crime, vowing to spare no effort in investigating the matter.

"The Service extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, parliamentary colleagues, constituents, and close associates," added NPS.

Meanwhile, Kenyans who may have witnessed the incident have been urged to contact the nearest police station, a law enforcement officer, or call the toll-free numbers: 999, 112, or #FichuakwaDCI (0800 722 203).

Were was shot and killed by unidentified attackers riding a motorcycle, one of whom reportedly got off the bike and opened fire at close range.

The assailant is on the loose, with authorities launching a manhunt for the individual responsible. The motive of the attack is yet to be officially known.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) revealed that Were had spent the better part of Wednesday in Parliament before leaving around 6:15 PM, having participated in the business of the day.

Following the MP’s death, ODM has demanded that the government and police launch a full investigation and take swift action to deliver justice.

"While we join his constituents, the people of the great county of Homa Bay, his family, colleagues, and friends in mourning, we call on the police to investigate the shooting incident and bring the culprits to book," ODM stated in part.
