Two members of President William Ruto's escort team were on Wednesday, June 21 sustained injuries after their black Lexus 570 rolled around the Great Rift Valley Lodge in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

According to multiple reports, the driver of the Lexus presidential motorcade vehicle had lost control at the Mlima Nugu area along the Moi South Lake road while trying to navigate a sharp bend along the route.

The driver was unconscious when rescue teams arrived at the scene and was immediately rushed to hospital, alongside his co-injured.

The senior officer indicated that it was not immediately clear what caused the Wednesday afternoon accident.

“We suspect the driver might have been speeding or was trying to avoid an oncoming car. But details are still scanty,” the officer told the Nation.

The scene was quickly cordoned off by heavily armed presidential security guards and members of the elite General Service Unit (GSU).

The vehicle was coming from Naivasha where President William Ruto had gone earlier to flag off the 2023 WRC Safari Rally, a precursor of the main rallying event set to officially begin on Thursday, June 22, running until Sunday, June 25.

The Head of State had flown to and from Naivasha for the Safari Rally engagement and was not in the motorcade that crashed. He had flown to the Loldia spectator’s point using a chopper.

Security officers did not allow eyewitnesses to take pictures as they made efforts to have the vehicle towed away from the accident scene.

The LX570, depending on the model, ranges between Ksh18.2 million for the 2015 model and Ksh24.6 million for the 2021 model.

During the WRC event, Ruto was also photographed driving himself in Nakuru while donning the Safari Rally attire, a racing suit with WRC initials used across all rally events in the WRC circuit.

The Head of State donned his Kaunda suit for the flagging off of the event which is marking 70 years since it was held way back in 1953 as a celebration of the coronation of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Afterwards, he switched to the race suit made just for him as he stepped into his second rally car in less than two weeks, this time around the hybrid Rally1 car belonging to Ford M-Sport with an electric blue and pink livery, different from its popular purple colours from last season (2022).
