Exiled lawyer Miguna Miguna on Monday, August 15 called upon Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, to concede defeat to the president-elect, William Ruto.

In a statement, Miguna called upon Raila to reach out to his competitor and accept defeat, referring to his handshake promise he made to the Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate during the Azimio mega rally in Kasarani on Saturday, August 6.

"Exit the stage gracefully right now. Place a telephone call to William Ruto and concede. You claimed that your handshake was because you love peace," he stated.

Miguna also offered hope to his followers about his return to the country from exile but stated that three conditions must be met before he even books a return flight to Kenya.

First, William Ruto must be sworn in as Kenya's fifth president before he reenters the Kenyan territory.

Second and third, the red alerts against him must be lifted and his Kenyan passport renewed- indicating that he has since packed his bags in readiness for the journey which takes approximately 15 hours.

"To all patriots: Relax. Thanks for the solidarity. Yes, I've packed my bags and I'm ready.

"But before I can take my flight back home, William Samoei Ruto must first be sworn in as President, the red alerts lifted and my Kenyan passport renewed. See you soon. Cheers!" he stated.

Miguna was deported on February 6, 2018, days after administering an oath during Raila Odinga's mock swearing-in at Uhuru Park. This opened a string of woes in his efforts to return to the country that led to a legal battle between him and the state.

His first attempt at returning to Kenya was halted in March 2018 after he was denied entry upon landing at the Jomo Kenyatta of International Airport (JKIA).

His second attempt in January 2020 failed after he was denied boarding rights to travel back to the country upon reaching Germany. At the time, Miguna raised an alarm over a red alert issued by the government.

In 2021, he complained about the red alerts that were still in place which prevented his return to the country, with the government alleged to have issued instructions to global airlines not to let him fly back to Kenya.

"This is to inform Kenyans and the world that Air France officials at the check-in counter at the Berlin Brandenburg Airport have just informed me that the Government of Kenya sent them a 'red alert' this morning that they cannot fly me to Nairobi. I'm waiting for a cop,” he stated at the time.
