Trade, Industry and Investments Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria defended his move to set up his office at the Ksh25 billion popular Two Rivers Mall in Ruaka.

Speaking to Citizen TV's Trevor Ombija on Monday, February 20, Kuria cited the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) building in Nairobi, where his ministry was located, and that moving to a new location was for upgrade purposes.

The CS further alleged that the multi-billion mall, opened by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on February 14, 2017, was partly owned by the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation, which is part of the Ministry of Investment Trade and Industry.

“The registered office of my Ministry is on the 17th floor of the NSSF Building. Two Rivers Mall which people are talking about is owned by the Ministry of Investment Trade and Industry; it is like somebody accusing you of being in your own house.

“I visit many countries. I know the environment which investors enjoy in those particular countries. I benchmark with many countries I am going to give investors an environment that ranks equivalent to what other countries do,” Kuria added.

He further opened up on his ambition to move foreign direct investment from $500 million to $10 billion before accusing Ombija of diving into trivial matters.

"I have a very ambitious program to move foreign direct investments from 500 million to 10 billion dollars. Of all the things we should ask ourselves, is it all about moving offices to a private mall? Let’s get serious! I have got a reason for everything," he added.

The former Gatundu South Member of Parliament also noted that he met ten presidents and a former Head of State in February, adding that his appointment as special envoy by President William Ruto has allowed him to advance the trade agenda to other countries.

“In all these tours I was not sending myself, I was appointed as a special envoy by President William Ruto to talk to our neighbours and try to reestablish our leadership in terms of the region, to try to push through a couple of agreements that we feel as of strategic value and importance to the country,” the Cabinet Secretary said.

“We need to reduce the amount of emotions around this issue. A Kenyan would rather spend all the money betting or speaking on the phone, which is not expensive. When you tell Kenyans let’s pay Ksh1,000 for electricity which will power us then the discussion turns emotional,” he challenged.
