The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has intensified its nationwide crackdown on illicit drugs with coordinated and high-impact operations in Homabay and Kisii Counties, signalling continued momentum in the Authority’s fight against narcotics.

In Oyugis, Homa Bay County, a joint intelligence-led operation by NACADA, the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), and the Administration Police Service (APS) led to the arrest of two suspects in possession of suspected narcotics and contraband.

According to a press statement sent to Viral Tea, authorities seized 400 packets of uncustomed cigarettes, 14 packets of cigarettes, various denominations of cash suspected to be proceeds of illegal trade, and what is believed to be cannabis sativa.

The recovered contraband is thought to have been smuggled into the country without customs clearance, violating national revenue and trade regulations. The suspects are currently being held at Oyugis Police Station pending further investigations.

In a separate but related operation in Nyakongo Village, Kitutu Central Sub-county, Kisii County, NACADA officers—working in collaboration with the National Police Service (NPS), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and ANU Nyanza Region—raided a rental property suspected of being a drug storage and distribution hub.

The operation resulted in the seizure of 134 brooms suspected to be laced with narcotic substances and two 90-kilogram sacks of dried plant material believed to be cannabis sativa. Eight suspects were apprehended and are currently in custody awaiting legal proceedings.

These operations come just weeks after the successful dismantling of a major drug distribution network linked to a notorious drug trafficker in Kisii County, highlighting NACADA’s sustained and strategic efforts to neutralise drug trafficking syndicates across Kenya.

NACADA on Wednesday, April 2, led a high-profile multi-agency operation which uncovered a massive consignment of suspected cannabis sativa in Kisii County.

The Wednesday afternoon raid in Mwamogeza Village, Kiamuasi Location, Daraja Mbili sub-location, led to the seizure of seven 50kg sacks, four 90kg sacks, and two large carrier bags of the illicit substance, all cleverly hidden in rental houses.

NACADA reiterated its commitment to a multi-agency approach in combating the drug menace, emphasising the importance of community vigilance and collaboration with law enforcement.

"NACADA continues to champion a multi-agency approach to narcotics control, collaborating closely with law enforcement and intelligence partners to protect communities from the harmful grip of drugs," read the statement in part.

"The Authority encourages the public to remain vigilant and report drug-related activities anonymously via the toll-free hotline 1192."
