For the second Sunday in a row, allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were caught up in chaotic clashes with police. This time round, police fired teargas and live rounds to disperse their convoy in Murang’a County on Sunday, July 27.

Nyandarua Senator John Methu and several allies of the former DP had travelled to Kigumo Constituency for a church service and were scheduled to hold a series of public rallies afterwards.

However, their plans were disrupted when police set up a roadblock on a major highway to prevent their movement.

Footage obtained by Viral Tea shows Methu and other opposition figures trying to reason with a senior officer, who insisted they turn back. In the exchange, Methu is heard asking, "What have we done? What is the problem with addressing the people?"

The standoff quickly escalated, with a teargas canister thrown in Methu’s direction mid-conversation, forcing him and his team to scatter for safety.

There were also unverified reports claiming that Senator Methu's convoy was attacked by unidentified individuals, suspected to be hired goons.

"Armed Police officers accompanied by goons have ambushed Leaders allied to DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua immediately after they left AIPCA  Christ The King Church in Kahuro, Kigumo Constituency, Murang'a County," a statement from Gachagua's team read.

"The Police, jointly with goons, blocked the leader's convoy and started throwing tear gas and live bullets. They dispersed the crowds and harassed the leaders, saying that they were not allowed to hold a meeting in the area."

Following the chaos, several individuals sustained injuries, and some vehicles in Methu's convoy were damaged, with reports indicating bullets had hit them.

Last Sunday, July 20, police intercepted a convoy of politicians linked to Gachagua. The convoy was halted by officers shortly after the group attended a church service at AIC Subukia in Nakuru County.

Led by Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, the convoy was stopped at a police checkpoint just minutes after leaving the church. Videos obtained by Viral Tea at the time showed uniformed officers ordering the politicians to halt, sparking a tense standoff along the roadside.

The videos circulating online also showed frustrated leaders confronting the officers, demanding explanations for the blockade.

During the exchange, the commanding officer was heard stating that the group failed to notify local authorities about plans to hold a political rally in the area. Methu, who was part of the convoy, defended the team, accusing the police of unfairly targeting them without justification.
