Several people are feared dead after a matatu was involved in a road accident along the busy Mombasa Road on Monday, August 8.

Machakos County, Deputy County Commissioner David Rotich confirmed the accident that involved a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) near Maanzoni, Machakos County.

According to a photo seen by Viral Tea, the matatu belonged to Makos Sacco and was headed to Nairobi County from Machakos.

The number of casualties, by the time of publication, was not established. Rotich told the media that the cause of the crash, which was reported to have occurred at 6 pm, was not established.

On Sunday, July 24, a Modern Coast bus plunged into the Nithi River along Meru-Nairobi Highway and killed 34 people.

Speaking to the media, Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Donatha Chali revealed that the bus driver had approached the Nithi Bridge at high speed and ignored the traffic warnings to motorists to slow down.

She also revealed that the bridge is a known black spot and had claimed many lives before the accident. The Mombasa-bound bus had veered off the bridge after the driver lost control of it.

Media reports had indicated that the bus' brakes had failed, causing it to hit the guard rails of the bridge and plunge into the river. It then rolled several times downhill before stopping beside the river.

Images seen by Viral Tea revealed that the bus was completely wrecked, with the roof torn off by the impact of the crash. Several bodies were spotted on the bus as well as in the river along the river bank.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that about 2,000 people have died on Kenyan roads since January 2022.

1,912 lives have been lost since January 1, 2022, which is a nine per cent increase from the 1,754 reported by the authority in terms of fatalities last year.

Pedestrians account for the highest number of fatalities. 682 of them were killed in accidents as compared to 573 who lost their lives in the same period last year.

After pedestrians, motorcyclists followed with 530 deaths; passengers (308), pillion passengers (185) and 28 pedal cyclists.
