The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has told motorists plying two major roads linking Nairobi and Nakuru cities to expect traffic disruptions.

In a notice released on Wednesday, July 9, the highways authority revealed that this will affect motorists using the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit Road (A8) and the Nairobi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha Road (A8 South), from Thursday, July 10 to Sunday, July 20, 2025.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority seeks to inform the public on possible traffic disruption along the Nairobi - Nakuru - Mau Summit (A8) Road and the Nairobi - Maai Mahiu - Naivasha (A8 South) Road from Thursday, July 10, 2025 to Sunday, July 20, 2025," announced KeNHA in part.

KeNHA revealed that this is to facilitate scheduled interview surveys and data collection. During the data survey, motorists may be stopped to share their journey details.

The survey data that will be collected will comprise Axle Load Surveys, Origin-Destination Surveys, Camera-Based Classified Cross-Sectional, and Turning Movement counts.

"KeNHA appeals to motorists and other road users to cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site," added the authority.

Here's why this matters to Kenyan motorists:

1. Foundation for Better Roads

The data being collected is crucial groundwork for the proposed Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit Expressway, a major project that aims to modernise and expand a vital transport corridor. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion, improve travel times, and enhance safety for all road users.

2. Temporary Inconvenience, Long-Term Benefit

Yes, there may be minor delays or interruptions during the data collection, especially if you’re asked to stop and share your travel info. But this short-term hassle is part of a long-term plan to ease future traffic and improve road infrastructure.

3. Smarter Infrastructure Planning

By gathering detailed info—like where motorists are coming from and going to, what types of vehicles are using the roads, and how traffic flows at key junctions—KeNHA and its partners can design a road system that meets real traffic needs instead of guessing or relying on outdated data.

4. Better Weight Regulation

The axle load surveys help monitor the weight of vehicles using these roads. Overloaded trucks cause serious road damage, leading to costly repairs and dangerous driving conditions. Data from these surveys helps enforce weight limits and plan for more durable roads.

5. Motorist Input is Key

Your participation matters. By sharing your journey details, you’re directly contributing to a national infrastructure upgrade that will affect how you travel in the future, whether it’s fewer traffic jams, better road quality, or safer highways.

In short, this survey is a big step toward fixing some of Kenya’s most frustrating road problems. It’s data-driven planning in action, and motorists are at the centre of it.

The notice comes hours after hundreds of motorists were stranded overnight on Tuesday, July 8, due to a massive traffic jam along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

Initial reports suggest the congestion, which started around 7 pm, was triggered by an accident involving two trailers near the Gilgil weighbridge.

The traffic jam, stretching over 40 kilometres, worsened when some drivers began overlapping lanes, further blocking the flow of vehicles in both directions.
