Former Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, has broken his silence moments after joining the Kenya Kwanza Alliance under Deputy President William Ruto.

In a lengthy statement on his Instagram account on Saturday, July 30, Sonko revealed that the trials and tribulations he has been going through while seeking the best for the residents of Mombasa County forced him to take a step back, with time to the August 9 elections running out fast.

He noted that he decided to work with a government that stood for the same vision for his people as himself, and one that was beneficiary to them.

He further noted that he will not leave his running mate, Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo behind and considered him among a list of positions offered to the former Nairobi County boss.

"Time is not on our side and I have had to sit down as a leader, think about what would be best for my people and I have come to the realisation that I should work with a government that shares the same vision for my people as I and one that benefits them.

"It is not about Sonko now, I have to think about the people of Mombasa and their future. I will not be leaving my brother Hon. Ali Mbogo behind, who has been put to suffering by those fighting me, and therefore from the positions offered I will also consider him," he wrote.

Sonko added that he dove into the agreement with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to be guaranteed jobs and opportunities to the people of both Mombasa and Nairobi, the two biggest cities in the country.

He then thanked Wiper Party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, who has been with him in his quest to lead the people of Mombasa as the next county governor.

"I however will not leave without gratitude to His Excellency Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka who has stood with me all along with the same ambition of helping the people of Mombasa.

"I also pass my gratitude to His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta who has been like a brother to me and supported me and I wish him nothing but the very best of luck in his future endeavours. Going to the other side, I go in peace and promise peaceful campaigns, not politics full of hate and insults," he added.

He appealed to his followers to give him blessings before penning the agreement within the course of the day.

Below are positions Sonko revealed they would be offered to him and his people as captured in the engagement agreement/Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

  1. One CS National Government
  2. Three PSs National Government
  3. Four Ambassadors
  4. Three CEC's Mombasa County
  5. Three Chief officers in Mombasa County
  6. Two CEC's Nairobi county
  7. Three Chief officers in Mombasa County

The move comes after he said that he would back United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Hassan Omar in the race for Mombasa County Governor seat if his running mate, Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo, is not cleared to participate in the contest.

Sonko noted that he would rather ditch Wiper, which is under the larger Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance, to support Omar than back ODM candidate Abdulswamad Nassir, whom he termed as a State project.
