Following the accident, a crowd charged at police officers responsible for erecting the roadblock, accusing them of causing the accident. The rioters turned away a traffic vehicle and a Toyota Landcruiser from the Vihiga Police Station.

Several people were reported to have been injured and were rushed to Vihiga County Referral Hospital. The hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr Vitalis Juma confirmed that they received several casualties, but the number of fatalities was yet to be established by the time of publishing.

County Commander Benjamin Ong’ombe confirmed the incident as police reinforcements arrived at the scene with anti-riot gear amidst the protests.

The accident comes just days after a drunk driver reportedly caused an accident along the Eastern Bypass near Kamakis in Nairobi County that was believed to have killed six people.

A viral clip surfaced on Sunday, October 30 showing the drunk driver being confronted by a number of bystanders who accused him of ramming into a matatu leading to the deaths while driving under the influence. It also showed that one of the vehicles involved in the incident had turned upside down while the front end of the 14-seater matatu was left in the wreckage.

Reports further indicated that an 11-year-old child was among those who lost their lives. Witnesses told the press that the Prado also hit two bystanders who were near the scene of the accident before stopping next to a car wash.

A boda boda operator, who was amongst the first on the scene, had affirmed that he had dropped off a customer in the nearby area and was on his way to pick up another passenger before he witnessed the speeding Prado ram a tuk-tuk from behind which subsequently hit a matatu parked by the roadside.

“I had just dropped a customer off in the area and I was on my way to pick up another person when I heard a loud bang. When I looked back I saw the tuk-tuk that I had left at the stage picking passengers, and a cloud of dust where the Prado had overturned and landed off the road," he noted.

The drunk driver escaped death by a whisker when he was saved by the airbags deployed after the crash. Police officers saved him from an angry crowd who rushed to the scene, baying for his blood.

Police spokesperson Bruno Shioso noted that between January 1, 2022, and September 26, 2022, a total of 15,924 victims of road crashes across the country have been recorded with 3,541 victims fatally injured and 7,236 persons seriously injured. 5,147 victims were slightly injured.
