Chege was on Sunday, October 30 involved in a fatal accident as he was driving along the Northern Bypass in Nairobi and was taken to the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital (K.U.T.R.H) Hospital.

He was believed to have avoided colliding head-on with a bodaboda rider who was riding on the wrong side of the road. The senator tried to avoid knocking the motorcyclist when he swerved and hit the road barriers before his car spun and landed in a ditch.

At the hospital, doctors recommended that Chege be taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and an online appeal was made to anyone willing to offer blood to save his life.

"Our brother urgently needs blood. Hon. Steve Chege Senator Laikipia County. is admitted at Kenyatta University Referral Hospital, and needs blood donations.

"All blood types are welcome to donate. Contact Geraldine Muiruri on 0712121500, or Kirika Githaiga for more details. Say a prayer for our brother," Philanthropist and activist Ndungu Nyoro shared the appeal on his social media handles.

His wife, Everlyne Wangare told the Nation that her husband's body was at the facility's morgue and would communicate more details.

Chege's death comes as Kenyans are still angered by reports of an accident along the Eastern Bypass near Kamakis in Nairobi County that occurred on the same day.

A viral clip surfaced showing a drunk driver being confronted by a number of bystanders who accused him of ramming into a matatu leading to the deaths while driving under the influence. It also showed that one of the vehicles involved in the incident had turned upside down while the front end of the 14-seater matatu was left in the wreckage.

Reports further indicated that an 11-year-old child was among those who lost their lives. Witnesses told the press that the Prado also hit two bystanders who were near the scene of the accident before stopping next to a car wash.

A boda boda operator, who was amongst the first on the scene, had affirmed that he had dropped off a customer in the nearby area and was on his way to pick up another passenger before he witnessed the speeding Prado ram a tuk-tuk from behind which subsequently hit a matatu parked by the roadside.

“I had just dropped a customer off in the area and I was on my way to pick up another person when I heard a loud bang. When I looked back I saw the tuk-tuk that I had left at the stage picking passengers, and a cloud of dust where the Prado had overturned and landed off the road," he noted.

The drunk driver escaped death by a whisker when he was saved by the airbags deployed after the crash. Police officers saved him from an angry crowd who rushed to the scene, baying for his blood.

Residents urged the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to erect speedbumps along the road to prevent further accidents.
