The University of Arizona was little-known to Kenyans until President William Ruto announced that Kenyans who would attend the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on Monday, December 12 would get scholarships from the institution.
The President had promised Kenyans on the eve of the event that those attending would walk away with the scholarships in a bid to get thousands of Kenyans to attend the themed celebrations.
"Every citizen who will come to Nyayo Stadium tomorrow will go back with a course paid for by the University of Arizona," the President promised Kenyans on Sunday, December 11.
President Ruto did honour his promise and awarded the scholarships to those who attended the national celebrations, in a unique fashion.
He availed a QR code for Kenyans in the vicinity to scan so that they can access the scholarship, which is a 16-unit course that would have usually cost one Ksh100,000. The course has been styled in a manner that suits entrepreneurship, viewed as an alternative for Kenyans earning money to employment.
"As promised, everyone present in this stadium today will get a free scholarship on global entrepreneurship and innovation from the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University. It is now time to keep the promise.
"There is a QR Code near you. Scan and access the scholarship now. A 16-unit course that would have cost you Ksh100,000, is now accessible to you for free, courtesy of the Innovation Jamhuri," he announced during his speech.
The agreement between President Ruto's Government and the University of Arizona could have been the fruit of a meeting held between the Head of State and the institution's leadership held in March 2022.
During his tenure as the Deputy President, Ruto met US leaders, entrepreneurs and scholars at the Arizona State University where he tailored his bottom-up economic approach to one that satisfies his American audience as the model of choice for world governments in the future.
