East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Winnie Odinga has revealed that she has undergone surgery after suffering a leg injury during the East Africa Community (EAC) Parliamentary games in Rwanda.

In a statement on her Instagram stories on Thursday, December 21, the daughter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga revealed that she ruptured her Achilles tendon during the sporting event.

She shared a photo of her leg wrapped in bandages, noting that she was recovering well following her surgery.

In a response to Kenyans who expressed concern regarding her silence in recent days, she further disclosed that she would go offline to allow her the chance to recover from her injury.

"Some of you have been asking why I've been quiet. I ruptured my Achilles tendon during the IPG (Inter-Parliamentary Games) in Rwanda.

"I'm all good after surgery, but I'll be low-key for a bit," Winnie, who is a basketball enthusiast, wrote.

She however did not reveal where the surgery was carried out nor whether she was still in the hospital or recovering from home.

Achilles Tendon & Injury

The Achilles tendon is a fibrous band of tissue that links the muscles in your calf to your heel. The strength and flexibility of this tendon are important for jumping, running, and walking.

Your Achilles tendon withstands a lot of stress and pressure during everyday activities, as well as during athletic and recreational play. If it becomes inflamed, swollen, and irritated, it is called tendonitis.

Tendonitis might be due to overuse or damage to the area. It can cause pain down the back of your leg and around your heel. You might notice that parts of your tendon are getting thicker, and hardening, because of tendonitis.

However, the tears in your tendon fibres can cause a complete or partial break (or tear) in your tendon. You might hear a “pop” that seems to come from the back of your heel or calf, which may be a tendon rupture, and needs immediate medical attention.

EAC Games

The 13th EAC Inter-parliamentary Games officially kicked off in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, on Friday, December 8, 2023. The annual sports event gathered more than 1,000 parliamentarians from six member states; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Sudan.

According to Article 49 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community, "the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) shall, among other things, liaise with the Parliaments of the Partner States on matters relating to the Community." This includes the Inter-Parliamentary Games (IPG), an annual sports event coordinated by the EALA.

The sports disciplines include football, netball, athletics, tug-of-war, volleyball, walk race, golf, basketball, and darts.

Winnie, being a member of parliament (MP) of EALA, was among the parliamentarians who represented Kenya in the netball games in Rwanda and was described as a key player for the EAC Parliament by her colleagues.

"Hon Winnie Odinga is our utility player in the EALA netball team," Winnie's colleague, Kanini Kega stated.
