10 Killed After Trailer Collides With Matatu At Mai Mahiu

10 people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident that occurred in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County on Saturday, June 8. 

Reports reaching Viral Tea's newsdesk revealed that the accident involved a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatu and a trailer.

The reports indicated that the accident involved the matatu operating under MUNA Sacco which normally operates the Nairobi- Murang’a route and the trailer.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the PSV was ferrying passengers for a family function when the trailer lost control and rammed into it killing almost all the occupants.

Naivasha OCPD Stephen Kirui has since confirmed the deaths. Photos of the wreckage seen by Viral Tea showed extensive damage to the matatu, indicating very little chance of survival.

The trailer also suffered an impact following the crash with different parts of the vehicles scattered all over.

Other photos showed bodies of the victims lying covered at the scene as a crowd of witnesses milled around to have a glimpse.

Police officers were also seen at the scene accident scene confirming that they had already managed the situation, with the wreckage of the matatu being towed from the area. The accident caused a traffic snarl-up along the ever-busy highway despite efforts to clear the wreckage.

Following the incident, a rescue operation was launched by a team of police officers with the help of residents who aided in removing passengers trapped in the wreckage.

The wreckage of the matatu was towed to the police station even as investigations into the deadly accident commenced.

This accident adds to the series of accidents that have claimed the lives of Kenyans.

NTSA Accident Statistics

1,553 deaths have occurred as a result of road crashes from January 1 to April 30, 2024. The data released by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that these deaths occurred across all counties.

Nairobi recorded the highest number of fatalities at 176, followed by Nakuru and Kiambu at 134 and 128 fatalities respectively.

Kisumu recorded 59 deaths, Machakos 56, Kilifi, Meru, Murang'a and Uasin Gishu recorded 50 cases each, and Narok 48 deaths.

Commercial vehicles and motorcycles had 356 cases each, Private vehicles recorded 342, while Public Service Vehicles caused 238 deaths. Unidentified vehicles caused 219 deaths, government vehicles 24, Tricycles eight, pedal cycles seven and hand/donkey carts two.

Losing control, overtaking improperly, failing to keep to the near side and unknown reasons caused the most deaths at over a hundred each.
