13 people have been confirmed dead following a Sunday morning crash between a 14-seater matatu and a trailer on the Nairobi–Nakuru highway near Kariandusi, Gilgil.
This was confirmed by Gilgil sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio, according to credible media reports. Photos seen by Viral Tea show the matatu wrecked on the roadside while the trailer lay in a ditch a short distance ahead.
Initial reports indicate the two vehicles collided, with the matatu’s front end crushed and the trailer losing control before overturning. Luckily, its container remained intact.

Disturbingly, several victims were seen lying motionless on the tarmac, though their condition was not immediately confirmed at the time of publishing this story.
This tragedy occurred just hours after another fatal crash nearby, which claimed several lives, including those in an ambulance.
On Saturday evening, six people — a patient, her husband, two relatives, a nurse, and the ambulance driver — lost their lives in a crash near Kimende on the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
Witnesses reported that the ambulance, belonging to St. Mary’s Elementaita, was speeding while ferrying a critically ill patient when the driver lost control, causing a fatal wreck that killed all on board instantly.
In a separate incident along the same highway at Gilgil, another crash caused a massive traffic jam. The accident, which involved several vehicles, including a truck, occurred between Kikopey and St. Mary’s.
Eyewitnesses said multiple passengers were feared injured. The truck overturned, blocking the entire road and bringing traffic to a halt until police arrived to ease the gridlock.
Accident Statistics Right Now
As of September 2025, data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) shows that 3,397 people lost their lives in road crashes within the first nine months of the year. In total, 17,270 people were affected through deaths, serious injuries, and minor injuries, which is about 291 more compared to the same period in 2024.
The breakdown of fatalities paints a grim picture of the most vulnerable road users. Pedestrians accounted for the highest share with around 1,285 deaths, followed by 858 motorcyclists. Passengers contributed to about 568 fatalities, while 309 drivers also lost their lives in the same period.
The numbers mark a slight increase from last year, indicating that while certain interventions may have curbed accidents in short windows — for example, between January and March 2025, when fatalities dropped by 2.5% compared to 2024 — the overall trend for the year remains concerning.
Vulnerable groups such as pedestrians and motorcyclists continue to bear the heaviest burden of road carnage.
