Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov landed in Kenya on Monday, May 29 ahead of his productive visit which is part of his African tour.

He was received by Ambassador George Orina the Director General of Bilateral & Political Affairs at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and thereafter met with Parliamentary leaders among them National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula.

The visit, whose period was yet to be disclosed, marked his fourth visit to the continent within a year, demonstrating Russia's dedication to engaging with African nations and fostering diplomatic ties.

Lavrov, during his visit, is also expected to meet President William Ruto with his aim of strengthening bilateral relations and exploring areas of mutual cooperation.

"A very fruitful week for Russia-Kenya bilateral relations is ahead," Russia's Embassy in Nairobi tweeted.

The meeting came days after Lavrov meet his Somali counterpart for talks on closer cooperation. However, it is likely to be closely monitored owing to Kenya's close ties with the United States (US).

Kenya's cooperation with the US in various areas such as trade, security, and development assistance has seen the two countries maintain their traditional relationship with each other.

The US has been a key ally and partner for Kenya, providing support in areas such as counterterrorism efforts, economic development, and democratic governance.

As both Russia and the US have global geopolitical interests, their interactions with African countries are sometimes viewed through the lens of competition or influence in the region.

Kenya, like many other countries, maintains diplomatic relations with multiple nations and seeks to pursue mutually beneficial partnerships.

The visit is also likely to add several eyebrows raised regarding Russia's relations with Kenya despite the former being at war with Ukraine since the country invaded the latter on February 24, 2022.

This was a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War that began in 2014, and which has led to more than 9.1 million Ukrainians fleeing the country and more than a third of the population getting displaced in Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II.

Notably, Russia was among the first world governments to congratulate President Ruto after he clinched the presidency in the August 9 general elections.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 12, 2022, congratulated President Ruto for leading the country in the historic Jamhuri Day celebrations at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, the first to have a notably changed format, introducing themes that will be commonplace in national celebrations going forward.
