The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party on Sunday, May 28 expelled Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol.

ODM Party's Siaya coordinating committee moved to expel the deputy governor amidst his row with his boss, Governor James Orengo.

“This meeting has unanimously resolved that the Siaya County Deputy Governor be compelled to resign from his position since he no longer subscribes to the ideals and aspirations of the party. The meeting has resolved that he be expelled and is hereby expelled,” Siaya’s Organising Secretary Walter Okello stated in part.

The meeting, which was attended by Orengo, also resorted to filling other party positions where office bearers decamped to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Okello had accused Oduol of working with the ODM opponents in Kenya Kwanza to sabotage the party's interests and targeting to distract the Siaya Governor.

"Such individuals are deemed to be working in cahoots with the UDA (United Democratic Alliance) party and therefore no longer recognised as members of the ODM. They are agents of instability and confusion sent to distract the governor (Orengo) from his agenda,” Okello said.

The resolution follows an order from ODM’s Secretary for Political Affairs Opiyo Wandayi who asked Oduol to step down over his 'evidently toxic relationship' with Governor Orengo.

Wandayi termed the stalemate as one that would have the potential of interfering with the county’s proper functioning, adding that quality service delivery cannot be guaranteed.

“Hon. Oduol should tender his resignation without any further delay. This would then create room for Hon. Orengo to appoint a replacement with whom he can harmoniously steer the County Government of Siaya,” he stated.

At the County Assembly, a bill proposed by Asembo East ward representative Gordon Onguuru seeks to oust Oduol on grounds of abuse of power.

On Thursday, April 6, Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga renewed calls for amendments to the Constitution that will punish rebel Members of Parliament (MP) who change their loyalties.

“We recommend changes in the law that will instil party discipline by requiring MPs who cross party lines after the elections to seek a fresh mandate from the electorate and to allow parties to replace nominated MPs who cross party lines,” Raila stated.

The ODM leader also proposed for the changes to include him being allocated powers to replace nominated MPs who switched sides politically.
