President William Ruto on Friday, June 9 launched the Talanta Hela programme at State House in Nairobi, an initiative meant to promote youth's creativity and talents.

The initiative has been digitised following the launch of a new talent search digital platform, the Talanta Hela application, which is aimed at making the process of scouting for creatives across counties, nurturing them and monetising their skills much easier.

In simple terms, talented Kenyans can now have their craft discovered, be it sports or creatives, through the app which is available for download through the Google Play Store for Android users and the App Store for Apple iPhone users.

Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba, while explaining how the new application works, shared a detailed plan of how the ministry will finance the programme pointing out that the government had already received partners from the private sector to support the initiative.

"We have established a partnership framework with some of the biggest corporates in town and we started this journey together. We have also plugged in the diplomatic community to be part of this process,” he revealed during the launch.

Viral Tea takes you through a step-by-step basis of downloading and navigating the Talanta Hela app:

First things first, to join Talenta Hela, download the app and enter your phone number along with the One-Time Password (OTP) code sent to your phone.

Complete the registration process by inputting your name and your national identification (ID) number as well as verifying your phone number. Click on "create account" to complete your registration.

Once registered, you'll be directed to a dedicated page where you can proudly display your talents.

Enter the essential details such as your talent name, gender, and date of birth, and choose your talent category.

The Talanta Hela app gives you two exciting options to choose from: sports and creatives. If you have a passion for sports, specify your preferred sport or the one you're good at, be it football, basketball, skating, or any other sport that ignites your passion.

Select the profile where you want to upload your video masterpiece.

Choose the skills that best describe your talent and the essence of your video presentation as this will help the scouts understand and appreciate your unique abilities.

Record or upload your file, and when ready, click on the "submit" button. Your submission will then be forwarded to the talent screening hub.

Your profile, accompanied by the submitted file, will be assigned to a scout for a meticulous review. The scout's keen attention to detail will determine whether your profile deserves approval or requires further refinement.

If approved, your profile will move to the next stage, where a panel of scouts will conduct a comprehensive evaluation, checking on each profile.

It is worth it to note that the videos are analysed in real-time by scouts at an already-established Talanta Screening Centre at the Kenya Academy of Sports in Kasarani.

“If you are in Wajir for example and you believe you can sing, take a two-minute clip of yourself in action and go to the Talanta Hela app which will be available across all platforms and post the clip.

“On the other side of the platform, we have established a talent screening centre at the Kenya Academy of Sports at Kasarani. As you post your clip in real-time, there will be scouts with about 20 screens and these clips are flashing in from all areas in Kenya,” CS Namwamba explained in an interview with Homeboyz Radio on Thursday, June 8.

If successful, you will receive an invitation to participate in physical trials at the Talanta Hela Academy, which is also the national academy. This is an incredible opportunity to showcase your skills in person and take your talent to the next level.

Academy Levels

The CS revealed that three levels of academies will be developed across the country to serve as centres of excellence, academies which will concentrate on growing talent across schools, communities and all stadiums across the country.

“Level one is the school and college ecosystem. The schools are going to be allowed to develop specific talents. For example, some schools are doing very well in athletics historically like St. Patrick Iten, we will establish infrastructure there specifically for athletics.

“Level two is the community. We will establish academies within the community and level three are all public stadiums across the country,” explained Namwamba.

The program will also collaborate with other organizations that are already doing great work in sports and the creative industry. This includes working with the Ministry of Education to utilise sports, music, and drama festivals.

Talanta Hela will also work with the football federation and county associations, and all the tournaments sponsored by the nation's lawmakers including MPs, MCAs, and governors will be brought together.

The program seeks to occupy the space that Kenya has been losing out on to its brothers and sisters in South Africa in terms of the destination for movie shooting and content. It also aims to take that space and provide opportunities for Kenyan artists to occupy that space.
