Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday, August 25 shifted the aim of his straight-shooting speech at Former Murang'a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria, accusing him of being insincere in fighting to lower the cost of living for Kenyans in the Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua temporarily deviated from demolishing former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, who was in attendance at the burial ceremony of freedom fighter Brigadier John Kiboko at his Ngorika home in Olkalou, Nyandarua County.

According to the Deputy President, Wa Iria was silent when the cost of fertiliser under former President Uhuru Kenyatta's regime was beyond reach for most Kenyans, but was vocal even during the anti-government protests when President William Ruto reduced the cost of fertiliser.

"I have heard you saying you are fighting for the people, and it is a good thing, that is also our work. When you were the governor during the handshake regime, fertiliser was costing Ksh7,000, I didn't hear you complain.

"Now we have lowered the cost of fertiliser from Ksh7,000 to Ksh2,500, why are you mobilising people to protest?" he posed.

Gachagua further noted that the Kenya Kwanza government had assumed power in September 2022 and encountered the elderly who were facing challenges getting their dues through the disbursement of funds, a matter he accused Wa Iria of also being silent on.

He affirmed that the government addressed the problem through timely disbursement of funds to the elderly, urging Wa Iria to stop faking it.

"Let's be honest, let's be truthful people, you have no record of fighting for anyone. Everyone here was tormented by the handshake government. All these road projects stalled, you didn't say anything.

"Now you're claiming that you're championing for the rights of Kenyans. When fertilizer was costing Ksh7,000 during the handshake government, why didn't you protest? Now we have lowered the cost...what are the protests for?" he challenged.

Wa Iria, ever since joining Azimio la Umoja days before the 2022 general elections, has been an ardent supporter of Raila Odinga and a strong critic of the Kenya Kwanza government.

On Tuesday, August 15, the former county boss decried the segregation and discrimination of a section of Kenyans because they did not vote for the President Ruto and the DP Gachagua-led regime.

He went to the extent of calling for Kenya to be divided into two should the ongoing bipartisan talks between Azimio and Kenya Kwanza fail again.

“If the Kenya Kwanza team in the Bipartisan talks continues to chest thump instead of being objective, then we can as well shut down the process and split this country so that, the so-called ‘shareholders’ remain with their company, and we can have a chance to form our own government that protects the ordinary mwananchi,” urged Wa Iria,

The Usawa Kwa Wote party leader was speaking in Emali where he joined other Azimio leaders for the funeral service of Brian Malika Mwendwa, who was shot dead by the police during the recent anti-government protests.
