Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua boldly confronted former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at the burial ceremony of freedom fighter Brigadier John Kiboko at his Ngorika home in Olkalou, Nyandarua County, flaring up the tensions the two leaders have been having for weeks.

It all started on Friday, August 25 when Raila denied allegations by Gachagua that he privately met with President William Ruto in Mombasa where he agreed to call for a truce but on condition that his personal demands are met, among them blocking out opposition co-principals among them Kalonzo Musyoka, Wiper's party leader and former Vice President.

Raila cautioned that any interference by the top officials in the ongoing bipartisan talks overseen by the National Dialogue Committee through whatever means could easily create a discourse within the Azimio la Umoja coalition, adding that the outbursts meant nothing.

"Leave Kalonzo and Kimani Ichung'wah to talk. You, Ruto and I should stay out of the ongoing talks. There is nothing wrong with engaging in talks," Raila warned Gachagua.

Azimio settled on Kalonzo while Kenya Kwanza, the ruling coalition, chose Kimani Ichung'wah, the Kikuyu MP and National Assembly leader of the majority, to lead the talks.

On his part, Gachagua admitted to being afraid of Raila because of how he changed the behaviour of former President Uhuru Kenyatta after the handshake in 2018.

"We fear you. The reason is that when you met with our son, Uhuru Kenyatta, he was a good person, he loved us, and he worked for us. But when you two became close, he changed.

“Whenever he came to you, he would laugh, but when he came here, he was angry, and we were worried. I must tell you, that is why when we hear about the handshake, we become afraid,” Gachagua explained.

The DP however claimed that Kenya Kwanza leaders will allow Raila to meet President Ruto if there will be assured that nothing beyond the ordinary would be brewed in the talks.

"But if you assure us that nothing will happen to our president if you meet him you can you can go ahead but we, the people from this region we are afraid,” Gachagua added.

The second-in-command further narrated that he had a very close relationship with Uhuru to the point of dining with each other and their children developed close bonds with each other.

"I myself was his personal assistant, he was my best buddy. We used to eat together, he would come to my place, and I would go to his place, Our children were friends, and when he got close to you, he turned against me and wanted to jail me.

"Before he got close to you, he used to go to church every Sunday, but after you got close, he stopped going to church. That's why we are concerned," the DP narrated amid cheers.

The DP at the same time called upon Raila to emulate the moves of his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and fight for the land belonging to Mau Mau veterans.

"I respectfully ask you to emulate your father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and fight for the Mau Mau lands. You know those who grabbed the land and they are your friends; please help us in this matter,” Gachagua stated.

Raila earlier claimed that he had to pay the late Mau Mau veteran's hospital bill because the family could not reach Gachagua. According to him, the hospital could not admit the Mau Mau veteran unless a certain amount of money was paid.

"I told my doctor to call the hospital for them to admit him since I was to facilitate all the payments. He was admitted after they had looked for Riggy G and didn't find him but they got Baba," he revealed.

Raila lamented the Mau Mau veteran was in a bad state before being admitted to the hospital. Had he not been admitted, Raila assured that he would have been taken back home.
