"Reports out here of an attempted robbery at Equity Bank Nairobi West branch. Word about shots having been fired. And police sealing the area.
"Be on the lookout if you're on those shores," Arnold Maliba warned.
One robbery suspect who was armed with a knife was shot dead while trying to grab cash that was brought to the branch by the bank's security partner.
The guard was reported to have been stabbed as they entered the building and was rushed to Nairobi West Hospital, with his identity not immediately established.
The bank, while confirming the incident, noted that the branch was closed while investigations were launched to establish the motive of the attempted break-in.
"Kindly note that we had a distress incident today morning at our Nairobi West Branch where an armed person attempted to gain access into the banking hall.
"Security agents led by local authorities are currently on site investigating the incident and the branch has been temporarily closed," it stated.
In January 2022, five armed robbers raided a bank in Nakuru at the Westside Mall along Kenyatta Avenue and stole Ksh2.3 million.
The robbers, armed with a homemade gun, hammer, knives, and a panga, forced their way into the banking hall where they held nine employees, hostage, before making away with the cash.
"CCTV footage showed that a KK security guard on duty, Tobias Juma, opened the main door of the bank for the robbers. After entering the banking hall, they then commandeered the members of staff to the toilets and locked them inside before they ransacked the drawers and stole Ksh2.3 million," a police report on the incident read in part.
Filed at the Nakuru Central Police Station, the report indicated that the robbers injured a teller, Meshack Tanui, during the heist. He was later rushed to the Aga Khan Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.
