Kenyan comedian Timothy Kimani, popularly known as Njugush, has recounted his harrowing ordeal with armed robbers in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) on Thursday, October 6.

Njugush had reported the case to Central Police Station under OB number 02 07/10/2022. Taking to his Instagram stories on Friday, October 7, he narrated that he was driving to the city from work at midnight when he encountered a middle-aged woman limping.

He was under the belief that she was seeking immediate assistance after she claimed that she had children who had not eaten for several days and had asked him for food, instead of money, to take to them.

“She smelled like alcohol but I guess no stress. I lowered my window a little bit and she said she has kids who’ve not eaten for days…she doesn’t beg but it has bitten each other so she had no choice.

"She looks beat, she told me she wants to fend for herself but because of an accident she had, she is forced to beg. She tells me she does not want money but if I have food in the car, I could give it to her,” Njugush began.

Her story moved Njugush to the point he was convinced to open the car door to inspect her injury. However, two thugs had gained access to the car in a split-second move and held him at knifepoint.

One of them seated at the co-driver seat had pressed the knife on Njugush's ribs, threatening to stab him. Meanwhile, the woman who faked her injuries demanded the comedian not to raise an alarm or else she would accuse him of trying to rape her.

"The co-driver goes ‘Ala Njugush, leo tutacheka (today we shall laugh)’ at this point nimejitetea (I begged for mercy)…they say they won’t be hard on me but their kids lazima wakule (must eat),” added Njugush.

He handed over his phone to the criminals while one of them moved to slap him while he was trying to distract them with a joke. Meanwhile, they demanded him the PIN number to his mobile money account so that the lady could draw out all his money.

“They laughed as the lady in the backseat was transferring the money. They said that even celebrities were going through tough times, asking me to join their gang to make money” Njugush narrated.

During the entire ordeal, the comedian was driving around the city under their instructions. He tried using his hazard lights to get the attention of any motorist in the vicinity but to no avail.

As the robbers were exiting the vehicle, Njugush saw the phone loosely gripped by the woman on her right hand and while struggling to exit, he snatched it from her and it landed inside the vehicle while he sped off before the rest of the robbers had a chance to pursue him.

"I knew that was my queue to speed off as the guys had started turning around to come back. I left with the door ajar. Straight to Central (police station). Be on the lookout, my people. Opening the door is where it’s at.

"It slaps. Glad they didn’t harm me or let their children drink milk but now I know better," he concluded.

Police records and data from other agencies show that Nairobi had the highest number of reported crimes, including murder, in the past three years.

Data from the 2021 Kenya Economic Survey showed that the three counties accounted for over a quarter of the 81,272 crimes reported in the last year. Nairobi topped the list, recording a total of 6,686 crimes, followed by Kiambu (5,715) and Meru (5,032 cases).
