Alleged fake lawyer, Brian Mwenda, has asserted that he is not a fugitive as claimed by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) which exposed him for masquerading as a lawyer and practising without a license.

Speaking on Monday, October 16 in the company of former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, Mwenda restated that he was following the law and would respond to any requests to record a statement with the necessary authorities.

"The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has released a statement requesting an investigation to be done by the Inspector General (IG) of Police," he said.

"For the record, I am not a fugitive. I am a law-abiding citizen and I am not going anywhere. Any place I will be needed, I'll go. We love the law and we want to persuade people that it is not just the text of the law but the purpose of the law."

Sonko on his part noted that the duo were awaiting IG Japhet Koome's direction on where Brian Mwenda would be required to appear to record a statement.

"This young man is not a fugitive, he is a young Kenyan and a future Chief Justice (CJ) of this country...future Attorney General (AG) of this country," Sonko supported Mwenda's sentiments.

The DPP, Renson Ingonga, had on Saturday, October 14 directed IG Koome to expedite investigations into Mwenda on a suspected case of identity theft of Brian Mwenda Ntwiga, whom LSK revealed was a victim of the crime.

Ingonga added that his office will independently review the evidence collected from the investigations and advise on the way forward regarding the prosecution of the suspect.

The DPP further instructed the IG to extend investigations to other individuals who were also impersonating lawyers.

Ingonga noted that the legal profession was considered vital in the fair administration of justice and Kenyans expect the most from lawyers whom they turn to for advice and representation in Court and other legal matters.

"Impersonators threaten not only the legal practice but the larger access to justice. Indeed, they pose a serious threat to the practice of law and are likely to have committed various offences under the laws of Kenya," the DPP added.

"It is noteworthy that the legal profession is key to the fair administration of justice and peaceful settlement of disputes in our judicial and quasi-judicial institutions. Kenyans therefore expect nothing less than utmost integrity within legal practice."

Mwenda is alleged to have appeared in court on many occasions, presenting himself as an advocate of the High Court and is reported to have won all 26 cases that he has argued.

In a video that circulated on social media last week, Mwenda was spotted in court when former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga and others appeared before a Makadara court and argued for one of the accused persons.
