A senior cardiologist at Devamatha Hospital in Kerala, southern India, has disclosed the intense, last-ditch efforts by doctors to save the life of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Odinga reportedly collapsed during a morning walk on Wednesday, October 15, according to an official at the Sreedhariyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Center in Koothattukulam.

He was in the company of his sister Ruth Odinga, his daughter Winnie Odinga, his personal doctor, and both Indian and Kenyan security personnel when the incident occurred.

“He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, but was declared dead,” said Krishnan M, the additional superintendent of police in Ernakulam, Kerala.

Addressing reporters outside the hospital, Dr. Alphons SABS explained that the medical team “used every possible life-saving intervention” to try to resuscitate the ODM leader.

According to her, the team applied Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) procedures alongside continuous Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in their final effort to revive him.

“With all other Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) criteria, we continued Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Despite our very sincere and continuous efforts with CPR and other measures, we could not save him. We are deeply sorry to inform you that he is no longer with us,” she said, adding “Our sincere condolences and prayers go out to his family and to the people of Kenya.”

CPR, a crucial emergency technique involving chest compressions and rescue breaths, helps keep oxygen and blood flowing to vital organs when the heart stops or breathing ceases. The procedure can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival if done immediately after cardiac arrest.

Odinga’s body is currently being preserved at Devamatha Hospital’s mortuary. Meanwhile, a Kenyan delegation of more than 30 leaders, headed by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, is preparing to travel to India to coordinate the repatriation of Odinga’s remains.

The group includes senior government officials, politicians, and members of the Odinga family, and is expected to depart on Wednesday evening.

President William Ruto earlier confirmed that the Indian government had agreed to assist in the repatriation process at Kenya’s request. He added that a joint government and family team, led by Mudavadi, would oversee the operation.

The President also announced the formation of a national funeral committee co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother.

Ruto declared seven days of national mourning and ordered that the national flag be flown at half-mast across Kenya and at all diplomatic missions abroad until Odinga’s burial. He also confirmed that Raila Odinga will receive a state funeral with full honours.

As a mark of respect, President Ruto said he would suspend all his public engagements to join Kenyans in mourning and reflection.
