Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is dead. According to reports, Raila, who had been receiving medical treatment in India, succumbed to cardiac arrest while taking a morning walk on Wednesday, October 15.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed his death at approximately 9:52 a.m. (Indian time), according to a hospital spokesperson.

Reports further revealed that his daughter and other close family members were present at the time.

Raila had travelled to Koothattukulam in Kerala’s Ernakulam district to undergo Ayurvedic therapy. The 80-year-old leader had landed in India six days earlier for treatment, drawing nationwide attention as mixed reports about his health spread online.

During an ODM function on Thursday, October 9, his brother, Oburu Odinga, confirmed that Raila was unwell and receiving medical care, but assured supporters that he was steadily recovering.

He, however, refuted claims that the former Prime Minister was in critical condition, explaining that Odinga was only experiencing a minor ailment that prompted him to seek treatment overseas.

“I want to take this opportunity to clarify this, there have been a lot of rumours about our party leader, Raila Odinga, that he is very sick, that he is almost dying, and that he is completely out," Oburu noted.

Adding: "But I want to tell you that he is out and about, and he is just like any other human being who was indisposed a little, and he is now recuperating and resting, but he was not in those conditions alleged."

Just a day earlier, Raila’s wife, Ida Odinga, had brushed off rumours about his health, stating that he was in good condition and had only travelled abroad to take some time off from the intense political scene in Kenya.

Security Meeting, Parliament Adjourns Session

President William Ruto, in response, called for an emergency meeting of the National Security Council at 10 a.m., followed by a special Cabinet session scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

At the same time, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has suspended the Wednesday morning sitting of Parliament, announcing that the House would reconvene at 2:30 p.m., when he is expected to deliver a significant announcement to MPs.

"I will invoke my authority under standing order number one and direct as follows: the sitting of this house is adjourned. We will have a sitting at 2:30 pm this afternoon when the speaker will give you some important communication," he stated.

President Ruto is expected to issue a detailed statement on Odinga’s death after wrapping up the emergency National Security Council meeting, which began earlier today.

In his address to Parliament, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula informed MPs that they would be briefed on the passing of the former Prime Minister when the House reconvenes this afternoon.
