The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has advised motorists planning to use the Nairobi-Nakuru highway to use diversions that were created to reduce the massive traffic snarl-up that forced motorists to spend the whole night in the cold along the busy road.

Reports had revealed that the traffic jam had begun to build up between Gilgil and the Weighbridge as late as Friday, September 2 and had continued into the early hours of Saturday, September 3.

Motorists had largely blamed the huge trucks using the weighbridge as the cause of the snarl-up and urged police and other authorities to intervene.

The delays also sparked worry amongst some parents who feared for the safety of their children and their well-being as they were marooned in the gridlock.

Others urged the government to expand the busy section of the road which is used mostly by motorists travelling to towns such as Nakuru City, Eldoret, Kisumu and generally Western Kenya.

"Western Kenya has been neglected since independence. Instead of using billions on the Expressway, President Uhuru Kenyatta should have constructed a superhighway on Nairobi-Mahi Mahiu/Nakuru roads to unlock the ever gridlock. Many suffer daily but nobody seems to care,"

"We have slept on the road from 8 pm Nairobi to Gilgil (currently). No movement. No idea what’s causing the gridlock," some of the comments read.

KeNHA revealed that police were on site and working on the situation to restore normalcy. Motorists were advised to exercise lane discipline and avoid overlapping as they approached this section in order to avoid further congestion.

The road agency then offered diversion routes to those planning to use the road. They include the Flyover-Njabini-Olkalou-Lanet and Naivasha-Olkalou-Lanet routes.

Trucks have been advised to delay their travels until the situation eases at Gilgil.

The road agency further noted that a section of the Northern Corridor, between Naivasha and Nakuru was experiencing congestion due to a traffic incident near the rail over road bridge between Gilgil turn-off and the weighbridge.

The road also serves the towns of Naivasha, Limuru and Mai Mahiu before concluding at Nakuru.
