Javeria Siddique, the wife of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif who was shot dead in Kenya, has demanded that the police in the country should be held answerable for her husband's death.

Stating on Twitter on Tuesday, October 25, Siddique expressed sadness about her husband being flown back home to his country in a coffin.

She shared images of Sharif's body being airlifted back to Pakistan in order to facilitate his burial.

"My husband Arshad Sharif is coming back home in a coffin. Authorities in Kenya are answerable to us," she stated.

Meanwhile, an autopsy conducted on the slain journalist's body revealed that he was shot between his head and his shoulders and died as a result.

Pakistan High Commissioner to Kenya, Saqlain Syedah stated that the incident that happened on Sunday, October 23 was a mistake by the Kenyan police.

“We have already done the post-mortem, which shows that he was shot between his shoulder and his head.

"It was a mishap that happened by the Kenyan police between Kajiado and Nairobi, which they have ruled a case of mistaken identity and that they were looking for a stolen car, They said they did not see the registration number clearly,” Saqlain stated.

The diplomat clarified that Sharif was not in the country on an assignment as an investigative journalist and that he was only in Kenya for holiday.

"Sharif was on a holiday on a visitor’s visa. If he was on the run, he would have not gotten the visa.

"There are procedures in attaining a visa, but as a journalist, he was still doing his blogs and everything, but not on the run,” the diplomat added.

Sharif was reported to have travelled in a vehicle that had a different registration number from the one that was reported missing in Nairobi before his demise.

A police report earlier on Monday, October 24 revealed that he and his brother were driving a vehicle that was carjacked in an incident which also saw the owner's son abducted after he left him inside the car.

"It started when officers from DCI Starehe circulated a report of theft of a motor vehicle/abduction vide OB 70/23/10/2022 that one Douglas Wainaina parked his motor vehicle registration number KDJ 700F outside an electrical shop and left his son namely Dancan Kamau inside the said motor vehicle. On return, he found the said motor vehicle missing," the report read in part.

However, a statement from the National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson, Bruno Shioso, revealed that Sharif rode in a Toyota Landcruiser V8 registered under KDG 200M, which raised a number of questions, especially on how police confused the registration numbers of the two vehicles.

The shooting reports have since spread across the world and have attracted the attention of the United States government through State Department Spokesperson, Ned Price.

“We encourage a full investigation by the Government of Kenya into his death. It’s not entirely clear that we know all the circumstances at this point regarding what led to his death, but we do urge a full investigation,” he stated.
