The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will announce the winner of the presidential elections today at the National Tallying Centre at the Bomas Of Kenya.

Six days ago, Kenyans took to the ballot on Tuesday, August 9 to cast their votes for their preferred leaders, and with almost all the winners announced across gubernatorial, senatorial, Members of Parliament, Woman Representatives, and Members of the County Assembly candidates, one category, the President, remains.

Data by the IEBC showed that out of the 22 million registered voters, slightly above 50 per cent turned up to vote.

6.06 pm: William Ruto of the Kenya Kwanza coalition has been declared the fifth president of the Republic of Kenya.

Ruto claimed victory with a total vote count of 7,176,141 (50.49 per cent) against his closest rival, Raila Odinga of the Azimio la Umoja coalition with a total of 6,942,930 (48.85 per cent).

5.35 pm: Chaos breaks out at Bomas of Kenya shortly after IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati arrives. The Chairperson has been whisked away to safety

5.30 pm: IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati arrives at Bomas of Kenya while four IEBC Commissioners led by Vice-Chairperson Juliana Cherera issue a statement at Serena Hotel. Cherera and the four commissioners accused IEBC of opaqueness. Read more

"We cannot take ownership of the results that are going to be announced because of the opaque nature with which these results have been handled."

4.39 pm: Saitabao ole Kanchory (Raila Odinga's chief agent) says they are yet to be given Form 34C and alleges Chebukati has been evasive today.

"We have intelligence reports that their system was penetrated and hacked and that some of the IEBC officials actually committed electoral offences and some of them ought to have been arrested if they were not arrested," he addressed. Read more here

4.06 pm: Deputy President William Ruto's mother, Mama Sarah Cheruiyot Ruto, arrives at Bomas to witness the unveiling of the Presidential results.

3.20 pm: IEBC moves announcement of President-elect to 4.00 pm from 3.00 pm

3.00 pm: Deputy President William Ruto arrives at the Bomas of Kenya

2.20 pm: The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has warned Kenyans against insulting or gloating each other after the announcement of the final Presidential results from the recently concluded General Elections.

2:15 pm: Nairobi Governor-elect Johnson Sakaja arrives at Bomas of Kenya ahead of Presidential-elect announcement.

2.08 pm: Roots party running mate, Justina Wamae arrives at Bomas of Kenya

2.02 pm: Raila Odinga makes a surprise appearance at his private office in Karen, Nairobi ahead of the announcement at Bomas of Kenya. It is about 2km from his private residence in Karen.

1.09 pm: IEBC sends out a media invite noting that they will officially announce the President-elect at 3.00 pm. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Deputy President William Ruto, Roots Party's George Wajackoyah and Agano Party's David Mwaura are in the race, with Mwaure since conceding.

12.45 pm: Deputy President William Ruto and his allies prepare to leave his Karen home for the big announcement at Bomas of Kenya.

12.00 pm: Roots Party presidential candidate George Wajackoyah and his Agano party counterpart, David Mwaure, have arrived at the Bomas of Kenya ahead of the big announcement.

11.23 am: Security outside the auditorium- and inside the auditorium, has been beefed up, with several police officers manning the space between the seating area and the area surrounding the dais and heavily armed officers protecting the environs and the entrance.
