Seven people died following a horrific road accident at Korompoi, Kitengela, on the Nairobi–Namanga highway on Saturday morning, August 9.

The 8 a.m. crash involved a head-on collision between a lorry headed for Isinya and a 14-seater matatu travelling towards Kitengela.

Confirming the deaths, Isinya Sub County Police Commander Simon Lokitari urged motorists to exercise caution to avoid similar tragedies.

“It is indeed a sad morning, we have lost four female adults and three male adults in a tragic accident. The seven succumbed on the spot. Several others have been critically injured and rushed to various hospitals,” Lokitari told reporters.

He noted that many drivers overspeed on that stretch of road, assuming it is free of heavy traffic.

Those injured were taken to different health facilities for treatment, while the bodies were moved to the Shalom Community Hospital mortuary and the Kitengela Sub County Hospital funeral home for identification and postmortem.

According to witnesses, the lorry was overtaking another vehicle traveling in the same direction when it rammed into the matatu, triggering a massive traffic jam along the busy highway.

“It was extremely foggy today. Motorists were driving with their headlights on. I was driving a few meters behind the matatu. Then I heard a bang followed by screams. I stopped immediately and realized it was an accident. Several bodies were thrown out of the matatu while others remained trapped inside,” said a tuktuk operator.

After the crash, enraged locals torched the lorry and staged protests, blocking the road as they demanded the installation of speed bumps and proper road signs.

This crash adds to the growing list of road accidents reported nationwide in the past month and comes just hours after another tragedy at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu–Kakamega Road, where 25 people were killed and several others injured.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina confirmed the Kisumu incident, saying the victims were believed to be mourners returning from a funeral on Friday, August 8.

Five survivors are in critical condition, while 15 others sustained injuries. The bus had reportedly been coming from a burial in Nyahera, Kisumu County.

On August 9, the NTSA Director General announced that a road safety team had been deployed to investigate the cause of the accident.

"To aid investigations into the cause of the crash, the Authority has dispatched a team of road safety auditors to the scene. We will provide more information as the investigations commence," the NTSA statement read.
