In a statement he issued on Friday evening, August 8 while expressing his condolences to those who lost their loved ones during the road accident, he also ordered a nationwide clampdown on traffic violations to enhance road safety.

“Our prayers are with the victims of the terrible accident that occurred tonight on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway. May the Almighty give strength to the families to bear with the loss. We wish speedy recovery to the injured.

“We ask traffic enforcers to act swiftly to bring to book those responsible for any acts of negligence leading to the accident and address all traffic violations to ensure road safety across the country,” President Ruto directed.

His remarks came as the death toll from the crash which saw a bus ferrying mourners overturn at Coptic Roundabout climbed to 25.

Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga confirmed the launch of an urgent blood donation drive at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) to support victims of the road crash. He added that 32 survivors are currently admitted to the hospital’s Orthopaedic Trauma Ward.

JOOTRH initially reported that 21 people had died and another 21 were undergoing treatment after a bus accident that claimed multiple lives.

The victims were brought in after the bus which was carrying 61 family members overturned near the roundabout, in what is considered one of the most fatal crashes on the route in recent years.

In a statement just hours after the incident, the hospital said 19 bodies were taken directly from the crash site to the facility.

Two unidentified men and a young boy died from their injuries shortly after being admitted to the hospital, which had brought the death toll to 21.

Government agencies, county officials, and local MPs have pledged assistance to the victims and grieving families, as authorities call on motorists to maintain utmost caution while on the roads.
