Captain Muthuka Munuve, Captain Brian Kimani Milaro, Dr Charles Mugo Njoroge, and flight nurse Jane Rispah Aluoch Omusula were among six people killed when an AMREF Flying Doctors aircraft crashed in the Mwihoko area of Nairobi on Thursday.

The four, described by the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) as “heroes,” were on board a Cessna Citation XLS aircraft when it went down, killing all crew members and two civilians on the ground.

The organisation, in a statement released late on Friday, said the team had been on a mission of service; that they took "to the skies with purpose — to heal, to save, and to serve.”

Profiles

Capt. Munuve, a check pilot with nearly seven years at AMREF, had logged over 10,000 flight hours while Capt. Milaro, with more than 5,800 hours, was transitioning to become a check pilot on the Pilatus PC-12.

Dr Njoroge had served as a medical doctor for more than seven years, while Omusula had worked as an emergency flight nurse for close to five years.

“This is an immense loss not just to the Amref Health Africa family but to the entire nation. We honour the lives of Captain Muthuka Munuve, Captain Brian Kimani Miaro, Dr Charles Mugo Njoroge, and Nurse Jane Rispah Aluoch Omusula, who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to humanity. These were not just professionals; they were heroes,” Gitau said.

“All of them took to the skies with purpose to heal, to save, and to serve. Their courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to saving lives will forever remain etched in the heart of this organisation and the history of this country.”

AMREF said its crisis teams have met with the families of the victims and residents affected by the crash, offering emotional, psychological, and logistical support.

Working with the Kenya Red Cross, the organisation has also provided displaced families with essential supplies, including mattresses, blankets, mosquito nets, and clothing.

The crash, which occurred on the anniversary of AMREF’s founding in 1957, prompted tributes from across the country. “As we mourn, we also recommit ourselves to honouring the legacy of our fallen heroes not just with words, but with action. Their mission will not end here," added AMREF.

AMREF confirmed that the aircraft’s cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder were recovered, though some components remain missing. The recovered data is anticipated to provide crucial details about the aircraft's final moments, such as flight conditions, engine behavior, and communications within the cockpit.

Authorities are working with the local community to locate them, with AMREF appealing to any residents who may have seen or found these missing components to bring them forward, as they are critical to the investigation.

Investigations are ongoing, with AMREF pledging transparency and continued updates. The organisation said it remains committed to honouring the legacy of its fallen crew “not just with words, but with action.”

"This tragedy is a powerful reminder of the risks our medical and aviation teams face every single day to ensure that someone, somewhere — often in a remote or inaccessible location — gets a second chance at life.

"Since our founding, we have upheld an unblemished record of service," added the foundation. Before Thursday's events, historical records showed that there had been no prior incidents involving planes operated by AMREF Flying Doctors, thus suggesting that such accidents are exceptionally rare for the organisation.
