A 28-year-old woman based in Nairobi has been charged with manslaughter after her boyfriend died under mysterious circumstances as they had sex in his house.

Winfred Mueni, a married woman, was charged after her 30-year-old lover, Titus Njoroge Kimani, died at Baba Dogo estate in Ruaraka, Nairobi on September 22, 2023.

She was deemed to have committed the unlawful murder of Njoroge who became unconscious before he was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The ordeal all began after the two parted ways at a club the previous night where she had gone to find out whether her husband was there, then found him among others who were making funeral arrangements.

The meeting ended at around 1 am with Mueni’s husband leaving her at the bar to drink with friends before she returned home. However, the boyfriend turned up at the same bar shortly after that and they continued to drink.

They all left the club, with Mueni, a hairdresser by profession, returning home at around 3 am and finding her husband asleep. The married couple would later wake up to have breakfast at around 6 am before her husband left for the funeral in Limuru, Kiambu County.

One hour later, Mueni left the house to go to her boyfriend's house. Despite her marriage lasting two years, she was dating Njoroge.

Outside the house, she found Njoroge's elder brother and uncle and greeted them, had a chat with them for a few minutes before proceeding to his house. Thereafter, Njoroge stepped out to purchase a packet of condoms before returning home.

Mueni would tell the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives handling the case that during intercourse, Njoroge had difficulty breathing before he started coughing and becoming weaker to the point of collapsing on her, hitting his head on the bed’s frame, before falling unconscious.

Mueni rushed out and called for help and Njoroge's colleagues responded, showing up at his house and finding him unconscious and naked.

He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead and the colleagues and relatives of the deceased escorted Mueni to Ruaraka police station where the matter was reported and she was placed in custody.

When she was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts, Mueni denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Hellen Okwani. She was released on a bond of Ksh500,000 with a surety of a like sum.

The case will be mentioned on February 22, 2024, before the hearing starts on May 30, 2024.
