President William Ruto on Friday, June 30 graced a civil wedding ceremony as the chief guest, which was the first time Kenya's revolutionary digital Civil Registration Services for Marriages was demonstrated.

The event that took place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi witnessed the union of the newlyweds, Nicholas and Judith, who became the first couple to receive their marriage certificate through the innovative digital platform.

At first, the assistant registrar had asked the groom to remove the veil to confirm that the woman opposite him whom he was poised to spend eternity with was his wife, in front of hundreds of pairs of eyes watching in celebration.

Nicholas and Judith were reminded of the importance of the union, with the groom notified of his commitment to having one wife.

After exchanging their vows, the couple went on to sign their marriage certificate as the popular song Sweetie Sweetie by Zabron Singers played in the background.

Following the five-minute exercise, President Ruto announced that he flew the couple to Diani for their honeymoon as well as organised a limousine ride from the airport to their fully paid honeymoon at a resort in the Coastal town.

"Congratulations on your wedding. I am very pleased to attend your wedding. I instructed the ministry to pick at random, Kenyans who were planning to celebrate their wedding today.

"I requested the registrar to have the wedding here after they booked it on the platform. I have booked the two of you four nights in Diani. We will organise a limousine to take you to the hotel. My very best wishes in your marriage," he stated.

Ruto and other government officials including Cabinet Secretaries presented the couple with wedding gifts as Nicholas and Judith also cut the wedding cake in Ruto's presence, a milestone for the middle-aged couple before they went off on their honeymoon.

On Friday, March 10, the government made it easier for couples intending to get married to make their marriage applications from wherever they are through the eCitizen platform.

Immigration and Citizen Services Principal Secretary Julius Bitok stated that the Office of the Attorney General (AG) lessened the burden of legalising marriages by moving the process online.

This means that Kenyans intending to tie the knot can apply through the e-Citizen platform, which can also be accessible from any device supporting an internet connection, even a phone.
