The five babies who were born prematurely and died less than a day after their birth were laid to rest at the South Cemetery in Nakuru East on Friday, February 3.

A sombre mood engulfed the cemetery as family and friends attended the burial to pay their last respects to the five babies; that is a boy and four girls.

The quintuplets' father, Simon Ndung'u, led them in paying their respects in the interment ceremony which their mother, Margaret Wairimu, missed.

Reports had indicated that she was admitted to the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital after undergoing a Cesarean Section.

She was also yet to come to terms with the loss of their babies whose birth drew widespread attention across the country.

On Thursday, February 2, her family members stated that she was recovering from the shock and was undertaking therapy sessions offered at the facility.

The bodies of the quintuplets were collected by the family's kin at 1:00 pm and put in one medium-sized casket before their burial at the cemetery.

Bahati Member of Parliament, Irene Njoki, was represented at the ceremony by her team, having been a constant figure to the family since the news broke on Wednesday, February 1.

“My sympathy goes to the mother of the babies Mrs Margaret Wangui and their Dad Simon Ndung’u. I wish the family peace, comfort, courage and lots of love at this time of sorrow.

"My office will support the parents and the family during this difficult time," the MP stated.

In addition, representatives of 2NK Sacco also attended the burial, the same matatu company where their father worked as a driver.

Nakuru Level 5 Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Aisha Maina confirmed to TV47 Digital the news of the babies' passing, barely 24 hours after Wairimu gave birth to the quintuplets.

The babies were delivered at seven months and were on life support in incubatorsThe four girls and one boy weighed between 500 grams and 650 grams at birth.

"At this birth weight, chances of survival are slim since even the internal organs are not fully developed," said the Superintendent.
