Nairobi-based entrepreneur and TikTok personality Kakan Maiyo was on Friday, July 11, freed on a police bond of Ksh10,000.

His release follows a dramatic incident where plainclothes officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) raided his office and arrested him by force.

On Friday, July 11, his legal team, headed by Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Vice President Mwaura Kabata, called for the case to be dismissed, arguing that no formal charges had been filed against the TikToker.

The lawyers also noted that despite earlier claims by DCI officers that he would be taken to the Kahawa Law Courts, he had not yet been arraigned.

The lawyers alleged that the DCI had completely violated the TikToker's rights.

"The DCI failed to arraign him in court despite claiming that he would be presented at Kahawa Law Courts. This is a total infringement on his rights," the lawyer said in a press statement.

Reports indicate that shortly before his release, Maiyo was allegedly taken to the Milimani Law Courts, though he was never formally arraigned. He was later returned to Muthaiga Police Station, where he was released on a police bond of Ksh10,000.

A police bond is a temporary release granted to an arrested individual, allowing them to remain free while waiting for their court appearance. This type of bond is typically issued at the police station level.

Kakan Maiyo, widely known online as Kan, was arrested after a video circulated online in which he is accused of inciting violence against police officers and their families.

Maiyo is a well-known figure on TikTok, where he frequently criticises government failures and police brutality. He also uses his platform to promote his logistics business.

The DCI had appeared to specify the exact video that led to his arrest, but independent spot checks by Viral Tea on his TikTok page showed it was nowhere to be found.

However, one of Maiyo’s recent TikTok videos showed him urging DCI officers to stop abducting unarmed citizens and to resist being used by those in power.

In the same video, he appealed to the officers to consider the well-being of their own families—children, siblings, and other loved ones—when ordered to carry out such actions.

Maiyo has also posted other videos commenting on recent events, including the death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who reportedly died while in police custody.
