The night drive along the Nyeri-Nyahururu Highway on Wednesday, January 24 turned extraordinary for Catherine Wambugu, an apple farmer from Laikipia County, following her encounter with a pride of lions on her way home.
According to the popular apple farmer who took to social media, the scene unfolded near Solio ranch at around 10.40 pm and though she was left mesmerised, she was fearful of what could have possibly happened.
She indicated that the lions, numbering about 25, were playing and sleeping next to the road as per their usual night routine, not minding the threat they posed to motorists and pedestrians along the busy road.
Here is the video:
When she encountered the pack of lions, Wambugu, frightened of a potential attack, started to drive back towards the direction she came from.
However, the plot twist would come when Wambugu and her companions came across a lone motorcyclist heading straight towards the oblivious and playful big cats, warning him of the danger that he would have faced were it not for her intervention.
"After driving away like 2kms from where the lions were sleeping and playing we met a motorbike coming towards the many lions.
"My heart was beating 1000 times and we had to stop and quickly told the man on the bike to go back. We couldn't move before he turned because uuuuuuuuuu the danger ahead was big," she exclaimed.
Right after the encounter, the group went to report the incident to the nearest police station, warning motorists to be wary while using the road at night.
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is yet to issue any communication regarding the video that has now gone viral.
In December 2023, another traveller using the Nyeri-Nyahururu road reported a similar encounter with a pride of lions.
Residents from the area commenting online noted that it is not uncommon to spot stray lions along the stretch. Most of them claimed that their efforts to get the KWS to address the matter had proved futile.
Human encounters with lions have happened before, no matter the setting. On July 17, 2023, a lioness was spotted by CCTV cameras outside a residence in Rongai, Kajiado County right before suspected thieves staged a daring robbery at the residential home.
The video showed the female big cat gracefully prowling near the residence along an isolated Murram road and stopping just a few metres from the gate, presumably to observe the foreign surroundings she had encountered.
However, one hour before the wild animal was spotted, the gate to the residence was opened and out from the blue emerged three unidentified thievery suspects, one of whom was armed with a gun.
The lead suspect appeared to fire at a watchman manning the residence at close range before he and his colleague gained access to the home, followed closely behind by another one of the robbers.
The footage which was recorded at 2 am sent tongues wagging on social media with the majority of the reactions aimed at the presence of the lioness within the residential area.
Some netizens indicated that it was a sign of human encroachment into wildlife territory, which tends to brew human-wildlife conflict. To be specific, Rongai is almost a stone-throw away from the nearest boundary to Nairobi National Park.
