Police on Thursday, January 25 re-arrested a 46-year-old man after he was earlier arrested by members of the public on suspicion of killing a 45-year-old woman in Narok County.

The National Police Service (NPS) revealed that officers from the Lolgorian Police Station and Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) detectives from Transmara intervened after the suspect was held in custody by the residents who tied him with a rope.

The murder was reported to have taken place at Kilae Sub-Location in Moyoi Location in Narok County.

Police found the body of the woman lying in a pool of blood with multiple deep cuts on the head, a deep cut on the right hand at the elbow, a cut on the abdomen and a deep cut on the right leg.

"Some of the exhibits recovered from the suspect's compound include a pair of gumboots, a slasher and a crowbar, all stained with blood," stated NPS in part.

The body of the 45-year-old woman was taken to Lolgorian Level IV Hospital awaiting autopsy, while the suspect is in police custody pending arraignment.

A photo shared by the NPS revealed the pair of gumboots which were stained with blood, and could be subject to further investigations as detectives try to establish the motive of the murder.

The murder comes amidst concerns over the recent rise in domestic violence cases that have culminated in cases of women being brutally murdered by men they were interacting with.

UN Women defines the term femicide as an intentional killing with a gender-related motivation. It may be driven by stereotyped gender roles, discrimination towards women and girls, unequal power relations between women and men, or harmful social norms.

Gender-based violence is a major concern in Kenya. In 2022 at least 34% of women said they had experienced physical violence, according to a national survey.

The recent femicide cases have drawn outrage on social media with civil societies calling for action.

A report titled Homicide Country Data released in 2022 by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime states that 706 cases of femicide, or 2.64 cases per 100,000 women, occurred in Kenya in 2021.

Based on the same research, Kenya is one of the countries with the highest rates of female homicides and female abuse.

Civil societies and human rights organisations together with women on social media have condemned the recently reported killings of women and have called to action relevant authorities to address the issue, including women representatives and leaders.
