NCIC Vice Chair Wambui Nyutu Fired Over Involvement In Politics
The commission described Nyutu’s actions as 'untenable' and in direct conflict with her constitutional and legal duties.
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has dismissed its Vice Chairperson, Wambui Nyutu, over her ongoing participation in partisan political activities.
This is a move the commission says breaches both her oath of office and legal requirements. In a statement released on Tuesday, July 22, NCIC Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia announced that the decision followed a Special Commission Meeting held on July 22, 2025.

“The Commission unanimously resolved to relieve Ms. Nyutu of her role as Vice Chairperson of the Commission with immediate effect,” the statement read in part.
Nyutu has faced increasing scrutiny since the start of the year, with the commission citing a consistent pattern of political involvement.
According to the NCIC, three earlier Special Meetings were held—on January 3, January 23, and February 6—to address concerns over her politically charged public statements and appearances.
Although Nyutu initially rejected the accusations, the commission noted that she eventually apologised and formally pledged to avoid further political activity—a commitment that has since been broken.
“At its meeting on 22nd July, 2025, the Commission noted with deep concern that Ms. Wambui Nyutu has since been involved in partisan political activities, including participation in meetings affiliated with a particular political party,” Rev. Kobia said.
“These actions constitute continued engagement in partisan politics, in contravention of her commitment to the Commission and in breach of the expectations of impartiality required of all Commissioners.”
The NCIC has initiated the official procedure to remove Wambui Nyutu from her position as Commissioner, citing Section 23 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (CAP 7N) along with other applicable constitutional provisions. The Commission plans to formally notify the appointing authority to proceed with the removal process.
In a unanimous decision, Dr. Dorcas Kedogo has been appointed as the new Vice Chairperson, with the change taking effect immediately.
The Commission also moved to dissociate itself from any political statements made by Nyutu, clarifying that her remarks were made in a personal capacity and do not represent the official stance of the NCIC.
Reaffirming its dedication to neutrality and professionalism, the NCIC emphasised that all commissioners are required by their oath of office to uphold independence and avoid partisan politics.

Although the commission did not detail the exact incidents that led to Nyutu’s removal, she has been seen multiple times engaging with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In May 2025, during a church service, Nyutu publicly praised Gachagua, referring to him as one of the country’s top leaders.
Earlier, in November 2024, she held an official meeting with the former Deputy President at his home, where she was referred to as a 'daughter of the mountain.'
