Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati battled a recurrent cancerous brain tumour before his death on Thursday, February 20.
On Monday, February 24, his family told the press that after his initial diagnosis, he was taken to Germany for surgery to remove the tumour.
According to the family spokesperson, the tumour resurfaced in April 2024, prompting him to return to Germany for a second surgery.
Chebukati returned to the hospital in December 2024 after a check-up revealed that the tumour had recurred. In 2025, he was re-admitted on February 12 and placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He suffered a cardiac arrest on February 20, 2025.

“At no time was the immediate family called upon and informed he was clinically dead,” the spokesperson said dispelling social media reports.
The family plans to conduct a post-mortem examination on his body as they prepare for his burial, scheduled for March 8, 2025, at his home in Kitale.
The family had previously urged Kenyans to avoid coming up with speculations of whatever form surrounding his death and to accord them privacy so that they could mourn their kin peacefully.
The family spokesperson stated that Chebukati’s relatives, including his father, had travelled to Nairobi on Thursday night shortly after learning of his passing.
Chebukati passed away on the night of Thursday, February 20, after being admitted to a hospital in Nairobi earlier that week on Monday, February 17.
He served as the IEBC chairperson for six years until 2023 when he retired. In the course of his tenure, he presided over the 2017 and 2022 elections.
Following reports of his demise, several leaders across the country, including President William Ruto, expressed their condolences on social media. Ruto remembered Chebukati as a principled and dedicated leader who served the nation with integrity.
"I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity," he wrote in part.
"His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest In Peace."
