Kenyan singer and songwriter, Victoria Kimani on Monday, January 29 intervened with 10 practical tips for women to protect themselves even around the men they love, amidst the alarming rising cases of femicide in the country.

In a statement on her Instagram stories, the China Love hitmaker called for women to stop being vulnerable to men, even the ones that matter the most to them, to prevent encounters with abusive men that threaten their safety.

Her advice touched on various aspects, including financial independence, personal security measures, and the importance of trusting one's intuition.

In terms of finances, she emphasized the need to keep them private, away from men's knowledge, a crucial step she viewed as reducing dependency on potentially abusive partners.

Kimani also urged women to carry weapons of self-defence such as pepper spray or pocket knives when going on dates and to share their location with loved ones as an added precaution.

"Always secure your finances and keep them private. When going on a date, carry a weapon like pepper spray or a pocket knife. Share your location with loved ones," she stated in part.

Pepper spray is an aerosol spray containing oils derived from cayenne pepper, an irritant to the eyes and respiratory passages and used as a disabling weapon.

Kimani further advised that when they go on dates, they should not accept to visit a man or have a man visit their houses.

Addressing sensitive topics like sex work, Kimani advised engaging in such activities only in secure locations to minimize risks.

"If you must do sex work, go to a high end fully secured, semi-crowded hotel where someone will hear altercations," she continued, further insisting that ladies should never ignore their intuitions.

"Pay attention to signs of abuse and trust your intuition. If someone is verbally, financially, emotionally, or mentally abusive, they may escalate to physical violence."

Kimani encouraged women to reject the notion of making excuses for abusive behaviour, asserting that love should never involve abuse.

She urged women to stand in their power and know when to walk away from toxic relationships, emphasising the importance of operating from a position of strength.

"Abusive men are not going anywhere! They are here to stay as long as there is good and evil in this world. Check history, read stats, and look at what is happening locally and globally. Be vigilant."

Victoria Kimani urged women to also take self-defence classes and learn to walk away from abusive relationships, adding that it is time women operated fully in their power.

Her advice sees her join a series of celebrities who have come out to offer remedy tips to femicide cases, coming days after nationwide protests were held in Nairobi and various towns countrywide in response to the systematic killing of women and girls in general across the country owing to their gender.
