Drama ensued on Tuesday, September 26 as a matatu driver operating in Nairobi was arrested for charging Ksh60 fare to one of the police officers.

The incident occurred at Kenyatta National Hospital Police Station along Ngong Road and involved the driver of a Nairobi Metro Trans matatu who transported the police officer after accepting the latter's request to board the matatu.

According to eyewitnesses, the conductor told the officer reportedly in civilian clothes to pay the fare just like the rest of the passengers but declined.

Here is the video:

The public service vehicle was transporting passengers from Wanye estate to Nairobi on Ngong Road when the incident took place.

Verbal exchanges ensued, thus leading to a confrontation which prompted the officer to call for help from his colleagues at Kenyatta National Hospital Police Station.

”The police officer boarded a matatu from town and he was charged bus fare like other passengers and police have arrested him, see how they are harassing him,” a passenger told Ghetto Radio.

The passenger expressed his anger over the turn of events, accusing the police of unlawfully handling the driver.

"The police came and ejected the driver from the vehicle while we were going to town. They grabbed him and pinned him to the ground before they removed his clothes and cuffed his hands," another eyewitness lamented.

It was reported that the officer was backed up by a police patrol car that happened to be passing by at the time of the confrontation.

Consequently, passengers who had joined in the confrontation were forced to retreat when more officers swamped the place and began apprehending some at the scene.

The conductor had explained his side of the story, but the police officers sided with their colleague. He escaped, leaving the driver who was arrested and manhandled to the full glare of members of the public.

A video which circulated online depicted the driver crying and pleading for help as more officers kept out the angry crowd.

The officers also harassed journalists covering the episode. The officers demanded the reporters to delete the recordings before releasing them.

The National Police Service (NPS) was yet to comment on the matter.
