The Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA) on Tuesday announced the immediate reinstatement of Vincent Chepkwony, a private security officer who demonstrated exceptional bravery during the recent protests at a popular restaurant at Kimathi Street, Nairobi.
Chepkwony gained overnight fame after being recorded on camera opening the doors of the restaurant to protestors at the height of the Anti-Finance Bill protests.
As of Monday, media reports claimed that the security guard had been dismissed from his position at the company contracted to provide security services to the establishment.
According to PSRA, his actions, which involved shielding members of the public from harm, exemplify the dedication, selfless patriotism and courage exhibited by security personnel in safeguarding life and property.

"In light of the public concerns following Mr Chepkwony's dismissal by Hatari Security, PSRA convened a consultative meeting today.
"The meeting, attended by Mr. Chepkwony and Mr. Stephen Mwangi, the Managing Director of Hatari Security, aimed to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding his termination and seek a fair resolution," stated PSRA in part in a press release.
After a comprehensive review, the Authority firmly concluded that Chepkwony's actions were heroic, patriotic and commendable and therefore warranted a promotion and not a dismissal from duty.
"Consequently, the Authority directed Hatari Security Limited to reinstate Mr Vincent Chepkwony to his role as a security guard with immediate effect.
"This decision underscores the critical role security guards play in maintaining public safety and protecting property. PSRA remains committed to upholding the welfare and dignity of security officers, as outlined in Section 9 (1) of the Private Security Regulation Act No. 13 of 2016," added the authority.
Chepkwony was subsequently awarded the highest commendation and recognition for a Private Security Officer in Kenya for his bravery and unwavering commitment to duty.
PSRA termed his reinstatement as a testament to the core values that uphold the private security industry in Kenya.
“This commendation is in recognition of your remarkable dedication and service in the private security industry in the country. Your unwavering commitment, exceptional professionalism, and strict compliance with legal standards have been instrumental in promoting the development of the Private Security Industry in Kenya,” a letter addressed to the security guard read.
This recognition highlights the significant contribution of private security officers in maintaining peace and safety in the country, reinforcing the need for their continuous support and appreciation.
After the news of Chepkwony's heroic act went public, he was praised by Kenyans, with many volunteering to send him money.
The guard wound up receiving over Ksh100,000 in contributions, an amount that is 10 times his monthly salary.
