Police in Murang'a County have confirmed that a female passenger was killed following an accident on Thursday afternoon, August 18 that saw a lorry ramming two Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) and four private cars in Kambiti, along the Nairobi-Meru highway.

The lorry, according to reports, was ferrying beer to Sagana in the Mt Kenya region-based county when its brakes failed, causing it to lose control and hit six other vehicles.

The two PSVs were matatus from 2NK Sacco and they were carrying students to different schools.

The students from Nyeri high, Endarasha Boys in Kieni, and Kaheti in Mukurwe-ini were heading back to school after it was reopened today, alongside all schools across the country.

Police officers who addressed the media noted that those injured in the accident were taken to Murang'a county hospital.

The accident adds to a chain of accidents to have occurred across the country in several weeks, including the election period.

Seven people died and seven others were critically injured on Wednesday, August 10 after a vehicle they were travelling in crashed while on the way to celebrate an election win.

The vehicle crashed at Longelded in Samburu East along the Isiolo-Moyale highway, according to preliminary reports.

The over 15 people were heading to the location of a Member of County Assembly (MCA)-elect at Leerata for celebrations when their vehicle swerved off the road and rolled near Kalama Community Conservancy. The seven died instantly.

Several people were feared dead after a matatu was involved in a road accident along the busy Mombasa Road on Monday, August 8, the eve of the elections.

Samburu East Deputy Police Commander, Juma Boy, noted that several others sustained minor injuries and were treated at a local health facility where the critically injured were also rushed to hospital.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that about 2,000 people have died on Kenyan roads since January 2022.

1,912 lives have been lost since January 1, 2022, which is a nine per cent increase from the 1,754 reported by the authority in terms of fatalities last year.
