Three people — among them two police officers — lost their lives early Sunday morning, June 15 in a road accident near Slopes Villa in Kinangop, Nyandarua County.

The crash involved a police vehicle and a double-cabin pickup. Reports revealed that the officers were responding to a separate accident nearby when the collision happened.

According to the Motorists Association of Kenya, the police vehicle was speeding at the time and slammed head-on into the pickup.

Several others in both vehicles were seriously injured and taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

"The police vehicle, reportedly speeding while responding to another accident nearby, collided with the pickup, leading to a tragic outcome. Sadly, three lives were lost on the spot, including that of  2 police officers and one civilian. Several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention," the statement read in part.

"This heartbreaking incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by emergency responders and the importance of road safety for all. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and those injured."

Accidents involving police vehicles are not new. On June 3, a tragic accident claimed the lives of several police officers when their patrol vehicle collided head-on with a trailer at Matisi along the Bungoma-Webuye Highway. The impact left the police vehicle completely mangled.

In another incident last year, a police car veered into the wrong lane and crashed into an oncoming 14-seater matatu on the Kericho-Sotik Highway. While there were no reported deaths, the officer behind the wheel sustained minor injuries. Eyewitnesses alleged the officer may have been intoxicated at the time.

Also in April of the previous year, a police officer lost his life in a solo crash near the Lusaka roundabout along Uhuru Highway. According to Industrial Area OCPD Judith Nyongesa, the officer, stationed at Gigiri Police Station, had been driving from the City Centre towards Mlolongo when the accident occurred.

Between January and March 2025, Kenya recorded 1,139 road-related deaths, as per data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). Although this was a slight improvement compared to the 1,166 fatalities in the same period in 2024, the numbers remain alarming.

The NTSA breakdown shows that pedestrians were the most affected, with 420 deaths, followed by motorcyclists (301), passengers (189), pillion passengers (130), drivers (83), and pedal cyclists (16).
