Officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday, February 27 arrested the head of the Kwale County Treasury and his four brothers working in different county departments.

In a statement by EACC on its social media pages, the anti-graft body revealed that the five will face charges related to graft.

The commission further claimed that the five directed and owned two companies which they had been using to carry out fraudulent deals with the Kwale County government.

"EACC has this morning arrested Kwale County Head of Treasury and his 4 brothers working in various Departments in the county, to face graft charges. They are the Directors/owners of two companies, which they have been using to execute fraudulent deals with the Kwale County Government," stated EACC in part.

The quintet include the Kwale County revenue officer, the driver of Kwale Water and Sewerage Company Limited, the Kwale County procurement officer and an official working at the Ministry of Health, who was initially an intern at Kwale County.

They have been escorted from Mombasa Central Police Station to the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court to take a plea.

EACC indicated that the current charges relate to 10 contracts fraudulently awarded to the two companies which were paid exaggerated amounts of Ksh44.9 million and Ksh4.01 million respectively. The total amount was distributed to the suspects.

The tenders, which they obtained in violation of procurement laws using forged documents, were for the supply and delivery of sanitation materials, food and ration, general office supplies, and institutional appliances.

On Wednesday, January 31, EACC detectives arrested five individuals who formerly worked as senior officials for the Nyandarua County government.

The suspects were accused of paying Ksh13 million to six suppliers through fraudulent means, the suppliers revealed to have not supplied anything to the county government.

"The suspects will be charged with offences relating to fraudulent payment of Kes. 13,000,000 to 6 suppliers who did not supply anything to the County Government.

"Investigations established that the suspects forged documents to falsely show that the suppliers facilitated a County Investment Conference, which did not take place," stated EACC in part.

EACC has been tightening its noose on corrupt officials working in the government and state parastatals, among others.

In a quarterly report published by EACC on February 23, a sitting Member of Parliament (MP) who is yet to be named and his two daughters were among those fronted in the list of individuals set for prosecution, about allegations of procurement irregularities at his constituency amounting to Ksh51.4 million.
