Mtwapa, Mombasa County police officers on Thursday evening stormed a suspected hideout of the infamous “Panga Boys” gang, arresting four suspects in a decisive crackdown.

The 7 pm raid, led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), was carried out in the Labour–Mtomondoni area on the outskirts of Mtwapa Township, according to a statement by the National Police Service (NPS).

Inside a makeshift structure believed to be the gang’s base, police recovered three pangas and a slasher used in violent muggings that have terrorised locals.

The suspects are now in custody at Mtwapa Police Station, awaiting arraignment. "This operation underscores the commitment of the National Police Service to dismantling organised gangs that continue to threaten public safety," stated NPS in part on Friday, September 19.

"Sustained, intelligence-led policing remains critical to eliminating criminal groups and ensuring peace and security within our communities."

Authorities have pledged to sustain intelligence-driven surveillance and targeted raids to ensure communities remain safe.

The arrests came after a robbery in the coastal city, where CCTV footage showed criminals attacking and stealing from pedestrians. However, it remains unclear if the suspects are linked to those incidents.

The footage went viral, showing a gang attacking pedestrians in Nyali, Mombasa. It captured three men ambushing people at night, robbing them of their belongings, and assaulting them with machetes.

Reports further indicate that the victims were coerced into transferring money from their bank accounts to the gang.

The CCTV owner said he was alerted by a commotion outside his home and, upon reviewing the footage, saw the attackers harassing pedestrians before speeding off on a motorbike.

Police have since visited the scene to collect evidence, and investigations to track down the suspects are ongoing.

"For the next two to three days, I will be camping in Nyali to ensure that these boys are taken down. We will not allow [them] to come back. That incident is an isolated incident which happened and is subject to confirmations," Mombasa Police Commandant Ali Nuno said.
