Amnesty International Kenya has called for the immediate release of blogger, activist and Advocate Ndiangui Kinyagia, who has been missing since Saturday, June 21, after an alleged raid on his home in Kinoo, Kiambu County.

These demands come as pressure grows on authorities to explain Kinyagia’s whereabouts, six days after his disappearance.

Amnesty Kenya has blamed officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for his abduction, insisting that Kinyagia should either be freed or brought before a court of law, rather than being held incommunicado.

"Free Ndiangui Kinyagia. He was last seen on June 21 after a reported raid by DCI officers at his home in Kinoo. We call for his immediate release. If he is accused of any crime, let him be presented before a court of law, not held incommunicado," Amnesty Kenya posted on X.

On Monday, June 23, the family of Kinyagia, a 31-year-old IT expert and outspoken online commentator, revealed troubling circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

Multiple accounts highlighted that up to 10 Subaru vehicles thronged his residence on Saturday, June 21, with officers breaking into it. Kinyagia was revealed to have last made contact that afternoon with his mother.

"According to eyewitnesses, his own Neighbours, on Saturday afternoon, Mr. Kinyagia’s residence was surrounded by between six and ten Subaru vehicles. His home was forcibly broken into, and the last communication he had was with his mother around 1:00 PM that day. Since then, he has disappeared without a trace," stated the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) when President Faith Odhiambo and the Public Interest Litigation Directorate met Kinyagia's family.

"A report was filed at Kinoo Police Station, and an inventory of seized items—including laptops, passports, and electronic devices was submitted. However, his current whereabouts remain completely unknown."

Responding to Kinyagia’s disappearance, activist Boniface Mwangi expressed concern that the blogger might be in the custody of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), where he could be subjected to torture.

Mwangi argued that Kinyagia’s abduction highlights the ongoing injustices faced by young people and the abuse of power by leaders intent on silencing critical voices.

''This man is being held, and likely tortured in a detention hole run by the National Intelligence Service and Directorate of Criminal Investigations,'' Mwangi alleged.

Operating under X username 'Daguin Dd', Kinyagia on June 19 shared a post of the timetable highlighting the agenda for the June 25 protests from start to finish, including a march to the State House.

A review of his account activity as previously reported by Viral Tea revealed that he had last posted on June 19, 2025, with his last repost being on June 20, 2025, a matter which sparked concerns amongst Kenyans about his whereabouts and raised fears that he might have been abducted.

Preliminary reports claimed that DCI officers went to his residence in Kinoo, Nairobi, at around 2 pm, broke into the residence and carried away personal items. They were believed to have first held negotiations with his caretaker for hours before being allowed to break into his house at around 9 pm.

According to neighbours, the officers arrived in around 10 vehicles and remained at the residence for nine hours. During the operation, they seized two laptops, two phones, both old and current passports, and a yellow fever card. After compiling an inventory of the seized items with the caretaker, they secured the house with their own padlock.

LSK intervened on the matter, with Odhiambo condemning the incident as a serious threat to constitutional safeguards. The LSK is now preparing a court application to compel the police to produce Kinyagia and account for the circumstances of his abduction.
