Two people were on the night of Friday, July 14 killed in a multiple-vehicle accident at Acre Tano in Limuru along the Nairobi-Naivasha Highway.

A priest and his wife reportedly died on the spot after a trailer had lost its brakes and rammed their car in a crash where 20 vehicles were involved, including a school bus with 44 students onboard.

The accident reportedly occurred after one of the drivers attempted to make a U-turn along the busy highway.

"There are more cars on the other side. I am so shocked by this accident especially after seeing the victims," one of the eyewitnesses stated.

The victims were rushed to the hospital for medical attention amid rescue operations. Police officers were also deployed to the scene to control traffic.

Among the injured were two students from the Twilight Secondary School in Kayole, Nairobi County; they're currently receiving treatment at PCEA Kikuyu Hospital.

Residents lamented that the section of the road had become a black spot and urged the Ministry of Transport to take the necessary steps to reduce the number of fatalities along the road.

"The stones between the two highways should be blocked fully to avoid U-turns on a busy highway. That place is a black spot and trailers are always on free gear. You have to speed on all lanes otherwise you will be hit from the back," a resident stated.

They also urged the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to expedite construction works on the road where service lanes will be constructed to avert more loss of lives.

While confirming the accident, Kikuyu sub-county Police Commander Ronald Kirui revealed that investigations had commenced involving two truck drivers.

The accident happened weeks after the horrific crash in Londiani, Kericho County claimed the lives of 52 people and left 32 others nursing injuries.

Following the accident, Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen announced a series of changes in the transport sector to cut down on the frequency of road accidents in the country.

He directed the mandatory installation of dashboard cameras across all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) as well as school buses and vans as well as for the vehicles to be fitted with telematics.

"Telematics will have a GPS system showing where a vehicle will be at any particular time, it will have a black box recorder that will be transmitting the speed of every vehicle at every time.

"It will show the location of every vehicle and show when and who maintained the vehicle. It will show where the vehicle was serviced and who serviced the vehicle," he stated.

NTSA Accident Statistics

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed on Thursday, March 23 that the number of fatalities from road accidents across the country dropped by 4.6 per cent.

In a statement, the authority reported the reduction in accidents in one year, adding that overall numbers show a drop in fatalities from 1,021 to 974.
